I have a bit of a tradition of buying a book at the airport whenever I travel, and I picked this one up while leaving Cape Town in December — a decision I’m very glad I made.
I’ve been meaning to read more from Adele Parks ever since I read I Invited Her In last August, and although this isn’t my usual genre, I found myself completely drawn in from the very beginning. Our Beautiful Mess delivers family drama on a whole new level — intense, emotional, and utterly addictive. It’s not typically what I gravitate toward, but I genuinely struggled to put this one down.
The story centres on Connie, whose past resurfaces in the most unexpected and unsettling way. Years ago, she had an affair that nearly destroyed her marriage — something she has worked hard to move beyond. But when her daughter Fran returns home with her new boyfriend, Zac, Connie is immediately shaken. Zac bears an uncanny resemblance to John, the man from her past, and this similarity sets off alarm bells that are impossible to ignore.
As if that isn’t enough, Fran drops another bombshell: she’s pregnant, and she and Zac intend to keep the baby. Connie is understandably concerned — Fran is young, and the relationship is still new — and the situation quickly becomes emotionally charged. What follows is a tense, layered story where past and present collide, and long-buried secrets begin to surface.
Adele Parks masterfully builds the narrative through slow reveals, allowing the tension to simmer before delivering each new twist. The emotional weight of the story is palpable — you can feel Connie’s anxiety, fear, and desperation on every page. I loved how the author pulls you so deeply into the characters’ lives that you can’t help but become invested in their choices and consequences.
What really stood out to me was the sense of unease that runs throughout the novel. There’s a constant feeling that something isn’t quite right, and just when you think you have a handle on things, another revelation comes along to completely shift your perspective. More than once, I found myself genuinely shocked, with my jaw on the floor.
This is a story about family, secrets, consequences, and how the past has a way of catching up with us — no matter how carefully we try to bury it. It’s messy, emotional, and at times uncomfortable, but that’s exactly what makes it so compelling.
This is an easy five-star read for me. I was hooked from start to finish and loved every second of it. I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys character-driven drama with plenty of twists and emotional depth.
