At 15, Amy witnessed her father brutally murder his secret lover. Her testimony sealed her father’s fate. With him in prison, Amy and her mother must rebuild their lives in the shadow of a notorious crime.
Years later, Oliver Harrington walks into the restaurant where Amy works. Just like Amy, Oliver has a past he’d rather forget. Amy is drawn to him at a profound level; they feel a connection, an understanding…
This seems a lot like love, but does it hide something darker – an obsession that could lead Amy into a web of deception and violence she thought she’d escaped? As the truth looms ever closer, Amy must confront a harsh where there is love, there is often betrayal.

Oh my goodness, this one was intense and full of surprises!
Adele Parks tells this story from multiple perspectives and across different timelines, and I have to admit that initially I struggled to keep up. It took me a little while to settle into the structure and work out how all the pieces fitted together. But about a quarter of the way in, I picked up on the rhythm and fell into sync with the story.
As you get to know Amy, it becomes easy to understand her choices and why she wants to find some happiness with Oliver. I found myself rooting for her, but Parks does a wonderful job of showing just how deceiving appearances can be. The more you read, the more you start questioning what you think you know and who you can actually trust.
I have to admit that I struggled with the beginning of this one. At first, it felt as though the story wasn’t really going anywhere, and there were moments when I was very close to giving up. It just wasn’t grabbing me in the way I had hoped it would. I am very glad I persevered, though, because once everything started to come together, the story took a completely different direction.
By the final few chapters, I realised that almost nothing was what I had expected it to be. Parks delivers a major shocker completely out of the blue, and I absolutely did not see it coming. I love it when an author manages to pull the rug out from under me, and this one certainly did that!
This book felt quite different from the previous Adele Parks books I have read, and while the slow start nearly lost me, the payoff was definitely worth it. Once the story found its rhythm, I was completely invested and eager to see how everything would unravel.
Overall, this turned into a very enjoyable and surprisingly intense read. It is a good reminder that sometimes a little patience really does pay off. I nearly gave up on this one, but I am so glad I stuck with it!
