Even beauty has a dark side. It’s a stunning summer evening in the Lake District. The day has been hot and long, and tourists are only just leaving Rydal Water. One solitary rowing boat remains, face down in the reeds. Underneath is the body of a young woman.
DI Kelly Porter heads to the scene, but when she arrives, she gets another call. A suspected suicide at a health and fitness conference nearby. Two deaths in one day is never a good sign.
Neither case is as open and shut as Kelly had hoped. Both victims had links to the wellness industry. Both had secrets ready to be shared. And it seems they paid the ultimate price for them.

Official Summary

07 April 2026

I am new to Rachel Lynch and the DI Kelly Porter series—yes, I know, this is the thirteenth book! But the blurb had me curious, and the good news is that this can easily be read as a standalone novel.

Set during a beautiful summer in the Lake District, this crime novel is an atmospheric read with a stunning backdrop. There is a large cast of characters, and you will need to pay attention to keep track of everyone—especially if, like me, you’re new to the series.

When the body of a woman is discovered beneath an overturned boat, DI Kelly Porter is called to the scene. However, before she has time to fully settle into the case, she is pulled away to a second crime scene, where a man appears to have taken his own life.

As DI Porter and her team begin to unravel both cases, it quickly becomes clear that neither is as straightforward as it first seemed. The more they uncover about the victims, the more dangerous the investigation becomes.

This is a complex and layered story that keeps you on your toes, but it ultimately delivers a satisfying conclusion as all the puzzle pieces fall into place.

A special mention has to go to Melvin—I absolutely loved his character. He felt wonderfully unique and vividly brought to life. I could easily imagine myself sitting beside him, chatting by the lake.

If you’re looking for a twisty crime thriller that will keep you fully engaged as you piece together the mystery alongside the characters, then this is definitely one to add to your TBR.

But evidence comes to light that reveals a web of criminal activity beyond anything Kelly imagined. Behind the veneer of sleepy, touristy towns lies a dark and dangerous underworld. As Kelly threatens to expose those with much to lose, she risks paying the ultimate price to get to the truth…

About the Author

Author bio from the author’s site

Rachel Lynch grew up in Cumbria, and the lakes and fells are never far away from her. London pulled her away to teach History and marry an Army Officer, whom she followed around the globe for thirteen years.
A change of career after children led to personal training and sports therapy, but writing was always the overwhelming force driving the future. The human capacity for compassion, as well as its descent into the brutal and murky world of crime are fundamental to her work.
