I was gifted a copy of The Perfect Divorce, only to discover when I reached for it that it was actually the sequel to The Perfect Marriage. Needless to say, I immediately went searching for a copy of the first book before diving in. So yes, I may be a little late to the party with this one, but you’ll be seeing reviews of both books back-to-back—now you know what’s coming tomorrow!

This was only my second Jeneva Rose novel, and wow… I absolutely loved it. It easily earned a well-deserved five-star rating from me.

Sarah Morgan is a highly successful defence attorney, while her husband, Adam, is a struggling author. Feeling neglected by Sarah’s demanding career, Adam begins an affair with Kelly, a young waitress. He convinces himself that his betrayal is somehow justified—but everything changes when Kelly is found murdered in Adam’s lake house and he becomes the prime suspect.

With nowhere else to turn, Adam calls Sarah.

She rushes to the sheriff’s office only to discover not only that her husband has been arrested for murder, but also that he has been carrying on an affair for more than a year.

Despite the heartbreak and humiliation, Sarah puts her own feelings aside and agrees to defend Adam. Convinced that he is not capable of murder, she throws herself into building his defence while privately trying to come to terms with his betrayal.

As the story unfolds, I found myself admiring Sarah more and more. Her professionalism never wavers, even as her personal life falls apart around her. She quickly became the character I was rooting for, and I couldn’t help but feel for everything she was forced to endure.

Adam, on the other hand, tested my patience from beginning to end. He’s married to one of the best defence attorneys in Washington, D.C., yet constantly refuses to trust her judgement and repeatedly makes her job far more difficult than it needs to be. Time and again, he makes poor decisions that leave Sarah trying to clean up the mess. Despite all of that, I never truly believed he was guilty of murder.

Kelly, meanwhile, is far from a sympathetic victim. Although she is at the centre of the investigation, she is a complicated character whose actions make it difficult to form any real attachment to her.

Jeneva Rose keeps the tension building throughout the novel before delivering a brilliantly executed finale that completely caught me off guard. The ending left me reaching for The Perfect Divorce immediately, desperate to find out what happened next. An outstanding psychological thriller and an easy five-star read.
