Six authors.
One private island.
Seventy-two hours to write the ending that will change their lives.
Arthur Fletch, one of the world’s bestselling novelists, is a reclusive genius known for his iconic protagonists and fiendish twists. When six struggling authors are invited to spend a weekend on his private Scottish island, they arrive to discover a shocking secret: Arthur Fletch is dead . . . and his last book is unfinished.
Desperate to publish the novel, Fletch’s agent and editor have summoned these writers in the hope that one of them will imagine a worthy ending for this final book. To sweeten the deal, they are offering an irresistible prize: in addition to ghost-writing the last chapter––for a mind-boggling sum––they will also help the lucky writer successfully re-launch their own career, guaranteeing future bestsellers. The catch: the writers have just seventy-two hours to finish Fletch’s magnum opus.
Starting is often the hardest part. But getting to the end could be murder.

From the very first chapter, this book gave me a strong sense of déjà vu. I couldn’t immediately work out why, but after looking back through my reading journal, I realised it reminded me a great deal of You Are Fatally Invited by Ande Pliego.
Both novels feature a famous author, a remote island, a gathering of fellow writers, and a deadly mystery where the guests begin dying one by one. While the characters, motivations, and many of the plot details differ, the central premise felt familiar enough that I struggled to stop making comparisons throughout my reading experience. Unfortunately, that did affect my enjoyment of the story.
When bestselling author Arthur Fletch dies before completing his final novel, his agent and publisher make the unusual decision to keep his death a secret. Instead, they invite six aspiring authors to a secluded island off the coast of Scotland and challenge them to finish the manuscript anonymously. The successful candidate will receive two million dollars and the opportunity of a lifetime.
It’s certainly an intriguing premise.
The problem is that every one of the contestants is desperate for success, and all of them have something to gain. Cassie, however, has an even bigger secret—she isn’t really an author at all. The manuscript that earned her invitation was written with the help of ChatGPT, and she is determined not to let this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity slip away.
The novel also offers a rather cynical look at the publishing industry, highlighting the pressure to produce bestsellers, the importance of reputation, and the lengths some people might go to for fame and success. Whether or not that reflects reality is open to interpretation, but it certainly adds another layer to the story.
Overall, this is an entertaining locked-room mystery with plenty of tension and an engaging premise. However, because I had already read You Are Fatally Invited, I found it difficult not to compare the two. Had I picked up this book first, I suspect my reading experience would have been quite different. Even so, readers who enjoy isolated settings, publishing-world intrigue, and murder mysteries will likely find plenty to enjoy here.
About the Author
Author bio from the author’s site
It was a dark and stormy night (well, it was actually an unusually warm evening in Edinburgh, Scotland) when New York Times bestselling author V.E. Schwab proposed an absurd idea to longtime friend and screenwriter Cat Clarke: that they should write a book together. V had made quite a name for herself, with more than 20 books, including the Shades of Magic series, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, and Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil, but had sworn she’d never co-write a novel, let alone one without fantasy. While Cat, following a tumultuous career as an editor and the author of several YA novels, including Girlhood and Entangled, had fled the publishing industry to work in the even more tumultuous film industry, swearing she’d never return to books. And yet, fate—and an irresistible idea—made liars of them both. That night, as they switched from tea to something stronger, Evelyn Clarke was born.
This book held a lot of promise and I am sure many of you will enjoy every minute of it. Thank you for visiting. Until next time… Happy Reading!
