Still traumatised by her brush with a psychopath, Detective Cassie Maddox transfers out of the Murder squad and starts a relationship with fellow detective Sam O’Neill. When he calls her to the scene of his new case, she is shocked to find that the murdered girl is her double. What’s more, her ID shows she is Lexie Madison – the identity Cassie used, years ago, as an undercover detective. With no leads, no suspects and no clues to Lexie’s real identity, Cassie’s old boss spots the opportunity of a lifetime: send Cassie undercover in her place, to tempt the killer out of hiding to finish the job.

I read my first Tana French book back in 2020 when I received a review copy of The Searcher from Penguin Random House SA. I fell in love with her writing and have added copies of her books to my TBR ever since. I have finally managed to squeeze The Likeness into my schedule and what a brilliant read.

The author keeps you on your toes in this book with a lot of characters and Cassie Maddox is undercover, meaning she plays a double role. This book is intriguing and will keep you curious. I love the characters and enjoyed that I could not figure out who stabbed Lexie. This book was a long read, and it took me way longer than normal to finish it, but I loved every minute.

Cassie Maddox has left the murder squad. She is happy with her decision. When she receives a phone call requesting her presence at a crime scene, she is unsure why she has been called. Arriving on-site, she is met with a corps that looks just like her. The dead woman could be her twin. Frank Mackey, her old superior from her undercover days convinces Cassie the best way to solve the crime would be for her to step into the dead woman’s life. Especially since the dead woman has been using Cassie’s old undercover name. When Cassie steps into her role as Lexie Madison, she is drawn back into a dangerous world of undercover work…. And she loves it. The more time she spends pretending to be Lexie, the more she is drawn to her and the people in her life. Can Cassie remain professional and find this woman’s killer, or will she just disappear into Lexie’s world?

I loved the uncertainty of this story. You are never sure what is going to happen next which keeps you intrigued and, on your toes, as you flip the pages. I did not get to give this book as much attention as I would have liked to but found myself completely lost between the pages every time I picked it up.

Cassie Maddox is a woman who has crawled under my skin and I am very keen to spend more time in her world. She is a strong determined character. I love that she refuses to give up until the job is done.

I loved this book; it grabs your attention from the very start and keeps you glued to every word until you reach the last page.

Crime Thriller fans will not go wrong when reaching for this title. I highly recommend you add this one to your TBR, even if you haven’t read any of Tana French’s other books. (I have not been reading the books in order, and have found it easy to follow as a stand-alone read).

The Searcher

Cal Hooper thought a fixer-upper in a remote Irish village would be the perfect escape. After twenty-five years in the Chicago police force, and a bruising divorce, he just wants to build a new life in a pretty spot with a good pub where nothing much happens. But then a local kid comes looking for his help. His brother has gone missing, and no one, least of all the police, seems to care. Cal wants nothing to do with any kind of investigation, but somehow he can’t make himself walk away. Soon Cal will discover that even in the most idyllic small town, secrets lie hidden, people aren’t always what they seem, and trouble can come calling at

his door. Our greatest living mystery writer weaves a masterful tale of breath-taking beauty and suspense, asking how we decide what’s right and wrong in a world where neither is simple and what we risk if we fail.
