After finally reading The Silent Patient, I immediately bought Alex Michaelides’ other novels. This was my third book by the author, and unfortunately, it was also my least favourite. In fact, I came very close to not finishing it.
The premise sounded incredibly promising. A secluded Greek island, a famous former movie star, a group of friends with hidden resentments, and a murder—it had all the ingredients for a tense, atmospheric thriller. Sadly, the execution simply did not work for me.
The story is narrated entirely by Elliot Chase, who speaks directly to the reader throughout the novel. Rather than telling a straightforward story, he constantly interrupts himself, wanders off on tangents, and repeatedly reminds you that events did not happen the way you think they did. While I understand this was an intentional storytelling device, I found it frustrating rather than intriguing.
Instead of building suspense, the constant diversions broke the pacing for me. Just as I felt invested in what was happening, the narrative would veer off in another direction before eventually returning to the main story. I struggled to stay engaged and often found myself wishing the plot would simply move forward.
That said, Michaelides certainly knows how to create an intriguing mystery. There were moments that genuinely made me curious about how everything would come together, and I can see why readers who enjoy unreliable narrators and unconventional storytelling would appreciate this novel far more than I did.
Unfortunately, I never connected with the characters, which made it difficult to care about their relationships or the eventual outcome. By the time the final twists arrived, I found myself relieved that the story was over rather than excited by the revelations.
While The Fury was not the right book for me, it has received plenty of praise from readers who enjoyed its unique narrative style. If you like unreliable narrators, stories that play with the reader’s expectations, and character-driven psychological mysteries, this may be worth picking up. Sadly, it simply wasn’t for me.
