Alexandra grew up hungry. Hungry for food, hungry for safety, hungry for love. Which is why she’s worked so hard to have it a beautiful home, a gorgeous doctor boyfriend, and an ambitious job matching individuals with… unconventional emotional responses. Sure, her clients may sit somewhere on the psychopathy scale. But they’re not the dangerous, murderous kind. They’re doctors, lawyers, teachers, and everyone deserves love.
And that’s exactly what Alex thinks she’s found. Love. So she’s floored when she arrives to her dinner with her boyfriend, expecting a ring in a little box, and instead finding her best friend sat at the table with him. They have news. They’re together now. And apparently her birthday dinner is the best time to share the news.
Suddenly, Alex’s world implodes. She has lost the two people in the world closest to her, her only support. She’s utterly alone, her future in pieces. So when she unexpectedly bumps into a client, Rebecca, and Rebecca seems to want to be friends, it feels like a lifeline.
But then Alex’s now ex turns up dead, then more people around her seem to be dropping like flies. And she can’t help but wonder if this new friendship is a match made in hell.

I read Love Letters to a Serial Killer in March 2024, so when I stumbled across a copy of Matchmaking for Psychopaths, I was excited to move it straight to the top of my TBR pile. Tasha Coryell has a talent for digging into her characters’ psyches almost immediately, and in this case, Lexi had me hooked from the very first chapter.

The story begins on Lexi’s birthday, when she meets her fiancé, Noah, and her best friend, Molly, at a restaurant, only for them to announce that they are in love and having an affair. To make matters worse, Noah has not even remembered her birthday. Determined to win him back, Lexi’s life quickly begins to spiral out of control — especially when body parts start arriving on her doorstep.

Suddenly, Lexi finds herself dealing with two new psychopaths in her life: Aiden, the handsome and unsettling man who insists they are perfect for each other, and Rebecca, a new client at Better Love who is rapidly becoming Lexi’s closest friend.

As the gifts and messages intensify, Lexi discovers that the sender knows all of her darkest secrets — including the fact that her parents are serial killers. Could the sender be her mother, who is currently in prison? Lexi becomes convinced that Aiden must somehow be involved.

At the same time, Lexi is trying to secure a possible promotion at work while navigating office politics, particularly Nicole’s constant attempts to undermine her with their boss, Serena. Isolated and unsure who she can trust, Lexi must figure out who killed Noah before she becomes the prime suspect herself.

This was such a fun read, as long as you do not take it too seriously. While there are a few darker and more emotional themes woven throughout the story, the book largely satirises reality television culture and society’s obsession with toxic, larger-than-life personalities.

Lexi is a brilliantly complex protagonist. Her traumatic childhood, growing up with serial killer parents, lays the foundation for her inability to form healthy relationships and explains many of her questionable decisions. Watching her slowly let Aiden into her life — despite recognising that he is just as damaged as she is — makes for a fascinating and often chaotic character journey.

This was a wildly entertaining, darkly funny thriller, and I highly recommend adding it to your TBR pile if you have not already.
