Lyla is in a bit of a rut. Her post-doctoral research has fizzled out, she’s pretty sure they won’t extend her contract, and things with her boyfriend, Nico, an aspiring actor, aren’t going great. When the opportunity arises for Nico to join the cast of a new reality TV show, The Perfect Couple, she decides to try out with him. A whirlwind audition process later, Lyla find herself whisked off to a tropical paradise with Nico, boating through the Indian Ocean towards Ever After Island, where the two of them will compete against four other couples—Bayer and Angel, Dan and Santana, Joel and Romi, and Conor and Zana—in order to win a cash prize.
But not long after they arrive on the deserted island, things start to go wrong. After the first challenge leaves everyone rattled and angry, an overnight storm takes matters from bad to worse. Cut off from the mainland by miles of ocean, deprived of their phones, and unable to contact the crew that brought them there, the group must band together for survival. As tensions run high and fresh water runs low, Lyla finds that this game show is all too real—and the stakes are life or death.

This was the final book on my Ruth Ware backlist pile, which means I have now read all her books! There is always something satisfying about finally catching up with an author whose books you have enjoyed, and I am pleased to say that One Perfect Couple was another gripping read.

This book explores reality TV, relationships and the bonds that form when people find themselves in a crisis. It also asks a chilling question: how far are you willing to go when your survival is at stake?

Ruth Ware takes a group of people, places them in an almost impossible situation and then slowly pushes them to their limits to see how far they can be pushed before they break. And just to make things even more interesting, she adds a controlling and abusive man to the mix. What could possibly go wrong?

Lyla was a wonderful narrator. She is something of an outsider in the group and never really wanted to be part of the experience in the first place. While she often finds herself trying to keep the peace, she also becomes a protector when things take a darker turn. I enjoyed following her perspective as the situation on the island changed and the group’s relationships were put to the test.

I particularly enjoyed the diary entries scattered throughout the book. They added another layer to the story, clouding the truth and leaving me wondering what I could believe and who I could trust. I love it when an author makes me question everything I think I know, and Ware does a good job of keeping the uncertainty alive as the story unfolds.

The setting was another highlight for me. The isolated island, with its beautiful scenery and tropical paradise atmosphere, sounded absolutely wonderful. As I was turning the pages, I found myself rather keen to escape to this little island paradise myself. Of course, I would prefer to do so without the reality TV cameras, the interpersonal drama and the fight for survival!

At first, this appears to be a typical isolation thriller, with a group of people cut off from the outside world. However, the story soon develops into something much darker and more intense than I initially expected. The dynamics between the characters shift as the pressure builds, and it becomes fascinating to see how people react when their lives are on the line.

I also appreciated that the women in the group ultimately emerged as the survivors. Watching them navigate the increasingly dangerous situation and find the strength to keep going was satisfying, especially given the controlling behaviour and power struggles within the group.

Once again, Ruth Ware delivered a gripping thriller that kept me turning the pages late into the night. One of the things I love most about her writing is that her books never feel exactly the same. She takes familiar thriller elements and finds new ways to surprise me, and One Perfect Couple was no exception.

Now that I have officially worked my way through her entire backlist, I cannot wait to see what Ruth Ware has in store for us next!
