This book is a teen crime book that everyone needs to read. Honestly, this just might be the best mystery I have read to date. Thank you to Penguin Random House South Africa for sending me this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

This book was so beautifully written. I find that sometimes when reading mysteries, it can get a bit slow at times, however, that was not the case with this book. I found myself flying through this book and if I didn’t have the attention span of a squirrel then I probably could have read this in one sitting easily.

Brynn moves back with her family to their hometown after being away for four years. She gets a job at Motive, a true crime show, where she pitches a crime that affected her. Her favourite teacher, Mr Larkin, was found by three of her classmates and Brynn is certain they are hiding something. So Brynn decides she will try to research the unsolved case and is shocked when she discovers the truth.

This book is told from both Brynn’s and Tripp’s (this author really knows how to pick interesting names) points of view. Brynn is a very likeable character and you can’t help but feel bad for her when everyone starts to get mad at her. I like how easy-going and brave she was.

Tripp was a character you can’t help but feel sorry for. This guy went through so much that I think he needs therapy and a lot of it. But overall he was probably my favourite character purely just because I was living for the angst.

I loved this book and it had me on the edge of my seat. I read two of Karen M. MacManus’ books at the beginning of the year and I meant to get around to more of her books but haven’t found the time. After this book, I must get lots more of her books. I forgot how the books grab your attention and have you questioning every character. This book had so many plot twists in true Karen M. McManus fashion.

I am weirdly happy that the publishers are keeping the book cover similar, I don’t know why but I just feel like it will look better on a bookshelf that way.

In conclusion, I loved this book and I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone. An easy five out of five stars from me.

Milly, Aubrey, and Jonah Story are cousins, but they barely know each other, and they’ve never even met their grandmother. Rich and reclusive, she disinherited their parents before they were born. So when they each receive a letter inviting them to work at her island resort for the summer, they’re surprised… and curious.

Their parents are all clear on one point—not going is not an option. This could be the opportunity to get back into Grandmother’s good graces. But when the cousins arrive on the island, it’s immediately clear that she has different plans for them. And the longer they stay, the more they realize how mysterious—and dark—their family’s past is.

The entire Story family has secrets. Whatever pulled them apart years ago isn’t over—and this summer, the cousins will learn everything.

One of Us Is Lying by Karen M McManus

One of Us Is Lying is the story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walk out alive. Everyone is a suspect, and everyone has something to hide.

On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention.
Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.
Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess.
Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing.
Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.
And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High’s notorious gossip app.

Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention, Simon’s dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn’t an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he’d planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer who’s still on the loose?
Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them.
