Major Crimes, Major Obsession

A Wrap-Up of Sam Holland’s Gritty Crime Series

After finishing all of Sam Holland’s books, I can confidently say this: she’s a bold, fearless voice in the world of crime fiction—and her Major Crimes series is absolutely addictive.

Dark, detailed, and deeply disturbing in all the best ways, this series dives into the minds of twisted killers while shining a light on the emotional toll those crimes take on the people trying to solve them. If you like your thrillers gritty and your detectives flawed but determined, Major Crimes is unmissable.

Why I Love the Major Crimes Series

  • Disturbing but compelling crimes – Holland doesn’t shy away from the brutal or the bizarre. Every case feels original and deeply chilling.
  • Strong character continuity – Detective Cara Elliot and her team feel like real people. You get to know their strengths, struggles, and relationships across the series.
  • Real emotional weight – The trauma of the crimes isn’t glossed over. It lingers, just like in real life.
  • Fast-paced but thoughtful – The books are sharp and tightly written, with clever plotting and just the right amount of psychological insight.

My Thoughts on Each Book

  • The Echo Man
Dark, brutal, and unforgettable. The Echo Man is a perfect introduction to Holland’s twisted mind. The copycat killer concept was brilliantly done—and that final act? Wow.
  • The Twenty
A direct follow-up to The Echo Man, and even more intense. The countdown killings kept me on edge the entire time. Holland dives even deeper into her characters’ trauma and moral grey zones here.
  • The Puppet Master
This is easily one of the most chilling. The idea of someone pulling your strings from the shadows is deeply unnerving—and Holland absolutely nails that creeping paranoia.
  • The Countdown Killer
  • This one is a tense, fast-paced thriller that grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. It’s disturbing in all the right ways. This was the first one I read, and it sent me scrambling to find the previous books in the series.

My Personal Ranking

  1. The Countdown Killer  – Grabs you by the throut and doesn’t let go.
  2. The Puppet Master – A slower burn, but still absolutely gripping.
  3. The Twenty – Smart, shocking, and emotionally devastating.
  4. The Echo Man – Masterfully plotted and disturbing in the best way. (Because I read book four first – I knew what was going to happen and that spoilt this book for me a little – but that is all my fault.)

Sam Holland has carved out a unique space in crime fiction. Her books are not for the faint of heart—but that’s exactly what makes them so memorable. With psychologically rich characters and unflinching depictions of violence and justice, her writing leaves a lasting impression.

I’ll be eagerly watching to see what she does next. If you haven’t picked up one of her books yet, be prepared to fall down a very dark (and very compelling) rabbit hole.
