Something is wrong with Ruby Johnson.
A former resident of the ultra-elite Manhattan upper class, Ruby now works as a maid in the type of houses she used to live in. Unassuming, she sees everyone’s dirty secrets from the inside of their beautiful, renovated brownstones. But when Ruby witnesses a murder, she has wicked plans in mind that don’t involve telling the authorities the truth.
Eddie Flynn, streetwise ex-con-artist-turned-defence attorney, is the only lawyer in New York City willing to take on hopeless cases. And none is more hopeless than John Jackson’s—the gun that killed his neighbor found, with Jackson’s DNA, in his own home. Flynn and his unconventional team will need to use every trick they know to keep an innocent man from being locked up. But to save his client’s life, Eddie must first protect his own, as the scariest organised criminals in the city are out for his head.

Official Summary

This was another seriously entertaining legal thriller from Steve Cavanagh, and once again, he proves why the Eddie Flynn series is so addictive. From the very first chapter, the story pulls you in with a sense that something is deeply off, particularly with Ruby Johnson, who is easily one of the most intriguing and unsettling characters I’ve encountered in this series so far.

What I love most about these books is how cleverly constructed they are. The plot feels like a chess match, with layers of deception, misdirection, and reveals that keep you guessing. Watching Eddie Flynn and his team unravel what looks like an impossible case is always satisfying, and this time the stakes feel even higher with dangerous criminals circling and time running out for his client.

Ruby’s perspective adds a fascinating psychological element to the story. She’s manipulative, observant, and unpredictable in a way that creates constant tension. I found myself both repelled by and drawn to her chapters, which is a testament to the author’s skill in writing morally complex characters.

The pacing is fast and gripping, with short chapters that make it very hard to put down. There are plenty of twists — some I saw hints of, others genuinely surprised me — but what impressed me most was how everything ultimately fit together satisfyingly without feeling forced.

If I had one small critique, it would be that a few plot elements require a bit of suspension of disbelief, but honestly, the sheer entertainment value more than makes up for it.

This is a tense, cleverly plotted thriller with memorable characters and courtroom drama that keeps you hooked from start to finish. Fans of the series will love it, and it would also work well for readers new to Eddie Flynn who enjoy smart, high-stakes legal suspense.
