A decades-old secret that drove a mother from her hometown now threatens her college-bound daughter in this twisty new thriller.
Beckett Bowery never thought she’d return to Wyatt Valley, a picturesque college town in the Virginia mountains steeped in tradition. Her roots there were strong: Beckett’s parents taught at the college, and she never even imagined studying anywhere else—until a tragedy her senior year ended with two local men dead, and her roommate on the run, never to be seen again…
For the last two decades, Beckett has done her best to keep her distance. Then her daughter, Delilah, secretly applies to Wyatt College and earns a full scholarship, and Beckett can only hope that her lingering fears are unfounded. But deep down she knows that Wyatt Valley has a long memory, and that the past isn’t the only dangerous thing in town…

This was such an absorbing, slow-burning suspense novel that completely pulled me into its unsettling atmosphere. Megan Miranda has always been excellent at creating a strong sense of place, and Wyatt Valley is no exception — the picturesque college town setting feels layered with history, secrets, and a quiet sense of menace that lingers throughout the story.
I really enjoyed the dual timeline structure, which gradually reveals what happened during Beckett’s senior year while also following her present-day return as a mother trying to protect her daughter. The emotional core of the book — that mix of parental fear, guilt, and unresolved trauma — felt authentic and gave the mystery more depth than a standard thriller. Beckett is a compelling protagonist, and I found her anxiety about Delilah attending Wyatt College both believable and relatable.
The pacing leans more toward atmospheric suspense than high-energy thrills, which worked well for me, though readers expecting constant twists might find it slightly slower in places. That said, the tension builds steadily, and I appreciated how the story kept me questioning what really happened in the past and who could be trusted in the present.
The final reveals were satisfying and cleverly layered, even if not every twist completely shocked me. For me, the strength of the novel lies less in surprise and more in the creepy sense of unease and the emotional stakes between mother and daughter.
This was a gripping, moody thriller with strong character work and an evocative setting. If you enjoy mysteries where the past refuses to stay buried and secrets ripple across generations, this is definitely worth picking up.
