Watching You – Book Review

By Lisa Jewell

You’re back home after four years working abroad, new husband in tow. You’re keen to find a place of your own. But for now, you’re crashing in your big brother’s spare room.

That’s when you meet the man next door. He’s the headteacher at the local school. Twice your age. Extraordinarily attractive.

You find yourself watching him. All the time. But you never dreamed that your innocent crush might become a deadly obsession.

Or that someone is watching you.

Official Summary

This is a story of obsession and secrets, infatuation and deceit guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat with every page you turn. Be warned, the short chapters make for a page-turner you will battle to put down.

This is only the fourth Lisa Jewell book I have read – not sure why. She has a relaxed writing style that makes for very quick reading. That however does not take anything away from her incredible stories.

Joey has returned home after working in Ibiza for four years. Out of work and out of cash, she and her new husband accept her brother – Jack’s offer of a spare room in his Victorian Villa in Melville Heights. Despite all her better instincts, Joey finds herself drawn to the new next-door neighbour – Tom Fitzwilliam – the headteacher at the local school. What starts as an innocent crush soon develops into something much darker.

How it made me feel / what did I like or dislike

Watching You is full of twist that will leave you with your jaw-dropping at the end. The book jumps around between the past and the present a lot, so be sure to keep an eye on the time – it’s marked so you shouldn’t have a problem.

The author creates wonderfully colourful characters in the book, and manages to keep each one unique, from the very good looking Tom Fitzwilliam to his son Freddie – just entering his teen years, some naïve school girls and Joey’s easy go lucky husband Alfie.

When I started reading the book, I was not sure what all the fuss what about. Initially, I did not think it lived up to the blurb. The more I read, the more twists were thrown my way and the more invested I became in the story. Having finished the book, I am sold – I loved it.

If you have read other books by Lisa Jewell you will love this book, but even if you have not this thriller is guaranteed to surprise you. As mentioned earlier, I am not sure why I have only read four of Lisa Jewell’s book. I enjoy her writing and must read more of her books. Something I hope to rectify in the new year…. Wow, I cannot believe that we are already so close to the end of 2020.

If you are new to Lisa Jewell – I can recommend Watching You as well as Then She Was Gone (one of the other Lisa Jewell books I loved)
