To everyone who knows him, West Ashby has always been that guy: the cocky, popular, way-too-handsome-for-his-own-good football god who led Lawton High to the state championships. But while West may be Big Man on Campus on the outside, on the inside he’s battling the grief that comes with watching his father slowly die of cancer.
Two years ago, Maggie Carleton’s life fell apart when her father murdered her mother. And after she told the police what happened, she stopped speaking and hasn’t spoken since. Even the move to Lawton, Alabama, couldn’t draw Maggie back out. So she stayed quiet, keeping her sorrow and her fractured heart hidden away.
As West’s pain becomes too much to handle, he knows he needs to talk to someone about his father—so in the dark shadows of a post-game party, he opens up to the one girl who he knows won’t tell anyone else.
West expected that talking about his dad would bring some relief or at least a flood of emotions he couldn’t control. But he never expected the quiet new girl to reply, to reveal a pain even deeper than his own—or for them to form a connection so strong that he couldn’t ever let her go…

Official Summary

Was this book a masterpiece? God no. Was it super entertaining? Hell Yeah! Honestly, the entire time I read this book, it played out like a TV-Show…more specifically in my head, it played out as an early 2010s CW TV-Show. Honestly, it was giving such nostalgia for my childhood as I 100% could see the CW or ABC Family (Now Freeform) eating this up. So for that very reason, I just had to give this book a high rating.

Compared to some of the books I read this year, this one has to be for a younger audience. And as I have been slowly moving toward New Adult and Adult fiction in general I thought I was moving away from Young-Adult and would not enjoy this book as much as I did. I am weirdly happy about this as it means I can still stay within my favourite genre for a little bit longer.

West is a very interesting character, on one side I feel bad for the guy and I sort of understand that the way he acts is just his way of grieving…however on the other hand I was shocked that this character was written in 2015. As he has an early 2000s character written all over him. I mean the sexism, possessiveness and slut-shaming were terrible. I had mixed feelings about his character.

Maggie didn’t have enough personality for me to make an opinion of her as a character.  I mean she has a tragic backstory and you feel bad for her. Also, it bugged me that she did not have a single friend that was her own, they were all just West’s friends and that is not healthy. So hopefully Maggie will make some friends throughout the series.

My favourite character had to be Bradly, Maggie’s cousin, I liked how he cared for Maggie. I am looking forward to his book the most out of all the other characters.

Honestly, this book is sort of a fun read especially if you are the same age as the characters and you can happily say you would never make the decisions they would. I can’t help but shake my head every time these characters had an ‘I would die without you’ moment. Which was frequently.

Overall it was a nice short and quick read. I honestly would recommend it.

Under The Lights

In the follow-up to Abbi Glines’s #1 New York Times bestseller Until Friday Night—three teens from a small southern town are stuck in a dramatic love triangle.

Willa can’t erase the bad decisions of her past that led her down the path she’s on now. But she can fight for forgiveness from her family. And she can protect herself by refusing to let anyone else get close to her.

High school quarterback and town golden boy Brady used to be the best of friends with Willa—she even had a crush on him when they were kids. But that’s all changed now: her life choices have made her a different person from the girl he used to know.

Gunner used to be friends with Willa and Brady, too. He too is larger than life and a high school football star—not to mention that his family basically owns the town of Lawton. He loves his life and doesn’t care about anyone except himself. But Willa is the exception—and he understands the girl she’s become in a way no one else can.

As secrets come to light and hearts are broken, these former childhood friends must face the truth about growing up and falling in love…even if it means losing each other forever.

About The Author

Author Bio from the Author’s Site

Abbi Glines is a #1 New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and International bestselling author of the Rosemary Beach, Sea Breeze, Vincent Boys, Boys South of the Mason Dixon, and The Field Party Series. She is also author to the Sweet Trilogy and the Black Souls Trilogy. She believes in ghosts and has a habit of asking people if their house is haunted before she goes in it. Her house was built in 1820 and she’s yet to find a ghost in it but she’s still looking. She drinks afternoon tea because she wants to be British but alas she was born in Alabama although she now lives in New England (which makes her feel a little closer to the British). When asked how many books she has written she has to stop and count on her fingers. When she’s not locked away writing, she is entertaining her preschooler, she is reading (if the preschooler will leave her alone long enough), shopping online (major Amazon Prime addiction), running because she eats too many tacos, and planning her next Disney World vacation.
