1. The police are looking to charge me with murder.
2. No one knows who I am. Or how I did it.
3. If you think you’ve found me. I’m coming for you next.

After you’ve read this book, you’ll know: the truth is far more twisted…

Official Summary

15 January 2024

In the gripping thriller “Twisted” you are thrown headfirst into a world of suspense and murder. The novel opens with an ominous proclamation, inviting you to buckle up for a rollercoaster ride of twists and turns that will leave you questioning everything you know about crime fiction.

I was first introduced to this author in August 2023 when I was gifted a review copy of “Kill for Me Kill for You” by Jonathan Ball Publishers. Since then I have added two more of this author’s books to my TBR. I am loving his work, which means you can expect to see more of his titles featured on the blog this year.

“Twisted” is narrated by an unnamed protagonist who immediately confesses to being the prime suspect in a murder case. The tone is dark and foreboding, setting the stage for a tale that is as mysterious as it is thrilling. The protagonist issues a chilling warning to readers: they are being hunted and the game is afoot. The author skillfully weaves this sense of impending danger throughout the book, keeping you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

The story unfolds in a non-linear fashion, with alternating timelines and perspectives that add layers of complexity to the plot. As the protagonist’s story is revealed, you are taken on a journey that explores the blurred lines between truth and deception. The author manipulates the story structure, creating a puzzle that challenges you to piece together the fragmented details and solve the mystery alongside the characters.

The writing is sharp and evocative, with a keen ability to create vivid scenes that elicit an emotional response. The pacing is relentless, maintaining a sense of urgency that propels the story forward. Each chapter ends with a tantalising revelation or a cliffhanger, ensuring that you keep reading late into the night. The characters in this book are multi-dimensional and flawed, adding authenticity to the storyline, The protagonist’s baffling nature adds an extra layer of intrigue, as law enforcement officials and potential victims are equally well-developed, contributing to the overall richness of the story.

One of this book’s strengths lies in the exploration of the psychological toll of crime. The author delves into the minds of both the hunter and the hunted, exploring the motives and plans that drive each character. The psychological tension builds steadily throughout the book, creating a visible sense of unease that lingers even after the final page is turned. As the story rushes towards its climax, the author expertly reveals the truth behind the protagonist’s claims, unravelling a web of deceit that leaves you questioning your perceptions. The final twists are both unexpected and satisfying, delivering a conclusion that is as emotionally vibrant as it is intellectually gratifying.

You guessed it, this book kept me up late into the night balancing on the edge of my seat while racing towards the final page. “Twisted” is a masterpiece in suspenseful storytelling. With its gripping narrative, well-drawn characters and a plot that keeps you guessing until the very end, the book is a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers. Steve Cavanagh proves that he is a skilled architect of suspense, leaving you breathless and eager for more. “Twisted” is fresh, innovative and above all, twisted!
