It was supposed to be a summer of fun. What came next was anything but … Jasmine is 17, a fitness freak and neurotic. Her best friend Olivia is Jasmine’s polar opposite: overweight and unfit, Olivia is happy in her own skin, despite trouble at home. Best friends since nursery school, Jasmine and Olivia have each other’s backs until the glamorous Ellie arrives in town. Rich and popular, Ellie is everything Jasmine is not … but has always wanted to be. Jasmine is soon caught in the middle between her childhood friend and the new Queen Bee. Hurt by her oldest friend’s lack of loyalty, Olivia starts keeping her secrets of her own. As the rivalry between Ellie and Olivia heats up, Jasmine will make a single, devastating choice that changes everything. Book #2 in the ‘Intersection Series’, Toxic explores the lethal nature of fake friendship and is perfect for fans of Lauren Oliver’s ‘Before I Fall’ or Laurie Halse Anderson’s ‘Wintergirls’.

Official Summary

Olivia and Jasmine, best friends since they were young, stand by one another until glamorous Ellie comes along. When Ellie invites Jasmine to their magnificent seaside home for an end of summer ‘blowout’, Jasmine’s loyalties are tested when Ellie tells her Olivia will not be invited. Jasmine doesn’t know if she should go to the party or not. Jasmine has this need to fit in with Ellie and her friends as she secretly wants to be popular.

You see all the consequences of Jasmine’s chooses throughout the whole book. How one little choice can lead up to so many consequences. I really enjoyed this. I liked how well the author wrote the friendship that was clearly about to fall apart.

My favourite character had to be Olivia, my heart just aches for her. You could not help but want to hug her. I think this character was really well written.

My least favourite is Ellie. Every time this girl opened her mouth I felt like slapping her.

There were a few times where I just wanted to scream at Jasmine but overall I liked the character. I liked how the author showed how much she just wanted to fit in and also how much she cared for Olivia at the same time.

Although the ending was somewhat predictable it was amazing. I loved the book’s message on how important friendship and honesty is.
