I enjoy K.L. Slater’s work and this one was a wonderful twisty story. If you enjoy stories about twisted families who are simply horrible to each other, then you will love this book. No one is who they appear to be and there as so many dark secrets, this story will leave you thankful that these people are not your family.
K.L. Slater digs deep into this family’s relationships and the secrets they keep in the belief that they are doing it for a good reason. She manages to draw you into her character’s world with emotion running high as relationships are put to the test with a murder at its core.
When an old lady is found beaten up the police suspect two ten-year-old girls who were seen leaving her house covered in blood. The small community is outraged and quickly decides that the girls are guilty. In custody the two girls, Maddy and Brianna refuse to speak. Juliet and her sister are pulled apart while they are each trying to protect their own daughter and their parents are left picking sides. Juliet finds her entire world falling apart and as the family secrets come to the surface, she realises that her entire life has been based on a lie. Can she ever forgive her family for the things they have kept from her? And who can she turn to when everyone seems to be keeping so much from her?
Can you imagine your ten-year-old child being accused of murder? I think that must be every mother’s worst nightmare. This book centre around the possibility of a child killing an elderly lady, a horrid thought. At the same time, it shows a family falling apart as their past secrets are revealed. I could not drag myself away from this one and spent an entire weekend annoying my family with air pods plugged into my ears.
Juliet is a vulnerable woman. She is consumed by guilt and insecurity. She spent her life having her family remind her of her failures, no wonder she is battling to cope. I enjoyed the way she never doubted her daughter for a moment. She was determined to get the truth, even when she was forced to face some dark family secrets that caused her a lot of pain throughout her life.
This story is full of emotion and twists that you would not expect. I have to say it left me appreciating my rather normal family.
If you are looking for a gripping, twisty story about dark family secrets you couldn’t begin to imagine, then this is the book for you. I enjoyed the audiobook, the narrator delivered a pleasant listening experience.
