By Amy Heydenrych

It was supposed to be a new start. A dream job. It wasn’t supposed to end in murder….

After accepting a job with San Francisco’s hottest start-up, Freya can’t wait to begin her new life. And when her colleague Jay takes an interest in her, life at the office might just become more exciting.

But not everything is that simple. Fellow employee (and Jay’s ex) Nicole seems intent on making her life a misery. When she goes one step too far, Freya snaps and, together with Jay, they decide to take their revenge with a prank.

Then Nicole is found dead….

Have they taken it too far? Or does someone know what they’ve done?

In a small company, secrets aren’t easy to hide, and someone who knows them might just be capable of murder.

Official Summary

A mystery with a difference. The Pact deals with an office romance, office politics and explores how much abuse a new employee can take before she stands up for herself. But has she gone too far? Is someone in her office capable of murder?

I was shopping for varsity textbooks for my daughter at the begin of the year when I stumbled upon this book. I have never even heard of Amy Heydenrych, let alone read anything she wrote. You can imagine my surprise when I discovered that she is a South African author.

Her writing is easy to read, she builds interesting characters and throughs in a couple of twists that have your jaw-dropping.

When Freya starts her new job, the job of her dreams she is eager to make a good impression and ensure she makes a name for herself. She is quickly noticed by Jay, a colleague, and a romance develops between them. However, Jay’s ex, Nicole, also a colleague is not impressed with Freya and she goes out of her way to make Freya’s life miserable. Freya and Jay decide to take revenge with a prank on Nicole. Then Nicole is found murdered and Freya is faced with the fact that someone close to her is capable of murder.

If you have ever been caught up in office politics, then this book will touch a familiar note with you. This book captures that one nasty person in the office perfectly. This book is told from Freya and Isla’s perspective and it jumps around between timelines. The various timelines are noted by the author, but you do need to take note of them. Be sure to read the chapter headings. I’ve come across some reader’s who tend to give these heading a skip. You do not want to do that with this book.

I simply loved Julian. The author did an amazing job describing this young, successful businessman who appears just a little too full of himself. You just know how naïve Freya is when she does not see him for the sleazy boss he is. From the beginning, the author shows us that Julian is not exactly what Freya would like him to be.

This was not my usual type of book and I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. I cannot say that I loved this book, but at the same time, I did not hate it either. This was a good read and brought something new to my reading experience. I will keep an eye out for more by the author.

This is a highly entertaining read that will have you looking at your colleagues in a whole new light. If you enjoy a fast-paced novel with a few shocking twists along the way, then you will not go wrong selecting this book.

I would recommend this book – it was a good read.
