The latest in the highly successful Guido Guerrieri series shortlisted for the 2020 STREGA prize, Italy’s most prestigious literary award. It is a tense courtroom drama set in Southern Italy, but also a tale about passion and the passage of time. Guerrieri had fallen in love decades earlier with Lorenza, a beautiful older woman who was in his eyes sophisticated and intellectual. She made wonderful love and opened his mind to high literature, but ultimately treated him as a plaything and discarded him.

One spring afternoon Lorenza shows up in Guerrieri’s office. Her son Jacopo, a small-time delinquent, stands convicted of the first-degree murder of a local drug dealer. Her trial lawyer has died, so for the appeal, she turns to Guerrieri. He is not convinced of the innocence of Lorenza’s son, nor does he have fond memories of how their relationship ended two decades earlier. Nevertheless, he accepts the case; perhaps to pay a melancholy homage to the ghosts of his youth.

Official Summary

This courtroom drama will leave you feeling as if you are sitting in a courtroom, listening to the attorneys making their arguments. You are taken on a journey through the process of discovery right through to the final verdict being delivered. At the same time, the author draws your attention to the measure of time throughout life, and how the older we get the faster time seems to move.

Have you ever had a conversation with an elder person? Someone who has lived life and enjoys sharing his knowledge and experiences? That is what reading this book is like. The author leaves you feeling as if you have gained some valuable life knowledge by the time you get to the last page.

This book was a lot more than the story behind the appeal trial of Jacopo, it was also a meaningful look at the passage of time. At how at different ages, we experience things differently and how when we get closer to the end time seems to move so much faster.

The author tells a detailed story about the appeal trial, sharing insight into legal proceedings, evidence discovery and the final arguments made by the attorneys.

This was a brilliantly detailed story that left me feeling wiser by the time I reached the last page. While it is a work of fiction, it leaves you feeling enriched.

The author included a brilliant discussion between Guido and his punch bag, after reading that, I will never look at a punching bag in quite the same way again. I loved it, and it added a lighter touch to the story.

I just loved Guido Guerrieri. He is a character you wish you could sit down and chat to. He comes across as a wise – old man – one who has a lot of knowledge and life experience to share.

The legal procedure at times made it feel like the story wasn’t getting anywhere, while the colourful characters and feeling of enrichment made this an interesting, gripping read.

Lovers of legal drama, as well as thriller enthusiast, will have no problem getting lost in this book. This book is detailed and informative while at the same time extremely enjoyable. This is a great book, worth checking out.
