Ten years ago, Abigail Lovett fell into a job she loves, managing The Passage Inn, a cozy, upscale resort nestled in the North Carolina mountain town of Cutter’s Pass. Cutter’s Pass is best known for its outdoor offerings—rafting and hiking, with access to the Appalachian trail by way of a gorgeous waterfall—and its mysterious history. As the book begins, the string of unsolved disappearances that has haunted the town is once again thrust into the spotlight when journalist Landon West, who was staying at the inn to investigate the story of the vanishing trail, then disappears himself.
Abby has sometimes felt like an outsider within the community, but she’s come to view Cutter’s Pass as her home. When Landon’s brother Trey shows up looking for answers, Abby can’t help but feel the town closing ranks. And she’s still on the outside. When she finds incriminating evidence that may bring them closer to the truth, Abby soon discovers how little she knows about her coworkers, neighbors, and even those closest to her.
Megan Miranda brings her best writing to The Last to Vanish, a riveting thriller filled with taut suspense and shocking twists that will keep you guessing until the very end.

Official Summary

19 July 2023

I have been working my way through Megan Miranda’s books and I am yet to find one that I do not enjoy. The Last to Vanish had me racing for the ending to see where the story was going. This book is an intriguing read that will keep you reading late into the night as you lose yourself in the scenery.

The Last to Vanish transports you to a mountainside that is full of mystery. The author pulls you into this story with stunning scenery and a realistic cast that leaves you engrossed in the story right to the end. You cannot help becoming invested and when you think you have it all figured out, there is a brilliant twist you never saw coming. I love this author’s writing and cannot wait to spend more time reading her books.

Abby has been living and working at the Passage Inn for ten years, yet she still feels like an outsider. The locals are not very welcoming and they all seem to be carrying secrets they refuse to share. A history of mysterious disappearances on the mount has left the community in the spotlight all too often and the constant stream of visitors with questions has left everyone on edge. However, when the last guy to disappear’s brother comes to visit, Abby is faced with a lot of questions and she is determined to find the truth – no matter what that may be or the relationships she may damage in the process.

I loved this story; it was clever and full of twists that kept me entertained from start to end. This book is full of stunning scenery which is easy to picture while you flip the pages.

Abigail Lovett lost her family, yet she managed to find somewhere she can call home. While she feels as if she is kept at arm’s length by the locals she still manages to feel as if she belongs. However, when she starts asking questions, her outsider status is soon made very clear and she has no idea who she can trust. Her determination to find the truth draws you into her world and leaves you eager for her to solve the mystery of the past disappearances.

There is no doubt that this book has earned a place on my loved list for 2023. It is a clever, gripping read that will keep you curious right to the end. I love this author’s books and would recommend her work to all mystery/thriller fans. You will not be left disappointed when you reach for this one.

The Girl from Widow Hills

Everyone knows the story of “the girl from Widow Hills.”
Arden Maynor was just a child when she was swept away while sleepwalking during a terrifying rainstorm and went missing for days. Strangers and friends, neighbors and rescue workers, set up search parties and held vigils, praying for her safe return. Against all odds, she was found, alive, clinging to a storm drain. The girl from Widow Hills was a living miracle. Arden’s mother wrote a book. Fame followed. Fans and fan letters, creeps, and stalkers. And every year, the anniversary. It all became too much. As soon as she was old enough, Arden changed her name and disappeared from the public eye.
Now a young woman living hundreds of miles away, Arden goes by Olivia. She’s managed to stay off the radar for the last few years. But with the twentieth anniversary of her rescue approaching, the media will inevitably renew its interest in Arden. Where is she now? Soon Olivia feels like she’s being watched and begins sleepwalking again, like she did long ago, even waking outside her home. Until late one night, she jolts awake in her yard. At her feet is the corpse of a man she knows—from her previous life, as Arden Maynor.
And now, the girl from Widow Hills is about to become the center of the story, once again, in this propulsive page-turner from suspense master Megan Miranda.
