No. 23 has a secret. In this bedsit-riddled south London wreck, lorded over by a lecherous landlord, something waits to be discovered. Yet all six residents have something to hide.

Collette and Cher are on the run; Thomas is a reluctant loner, while a gorgeous Iranian asylum seeker and a ‘quiet man’ nobody sees try to stay hidden. And watching over them all is Vesta – or so she thinks.

In the dead of night, a terrible accident pushes the neighbours into an uneasy alliance. But one of them is a killer, expertly hiding their pastime, all the while closing in on their next victim…

“Taut, assured and reminiscent of Ruth Rendell’s psychological novels, Marwood’s second book more than lives up to the promise shown in her splendid debut, The Wicked Girls.” —The Guardian

Official Summary

What a spine-chilling story. I cannot believe that this is my first encounter with Alex Marwood. The Killer Next Door will keep you reading into the early hours as the author keeps you intrigued with this dark, creepy story filled with horrible details you simply cannot drag yourself away from.

After reading The Killer Next Door, Alex Marwood is an author I simply must spend more time with. Her dark, detailed tale had me hooked from start to finish. I loved her characters and found even the disgusting details brilliantly engrossing.

Collette has been running for three years, but with her mother, on her deathbed, she had to return to London. She cannot leave her mother to die alone, even if she was a terrible mother, she is still her mother. In need of discretion, she finds a room in a house where the greedy landlord does not ask too many questions.

Surround by an unusual group of people, Collette finds herself interacting with her neighbours more than she would like to. After a tragic event late one night, Collette, Cher, Thomas, Hossain, and Vesta are drawn together.

Each one has a secret, but are they prepared for the secret that is about to be exposed.

This book is brilliantly dark and wickedly scary. I could not drag myself away. I enjoyed the author’s graphic ventures into the killer’s mind, sharing all the gory details of his actions. As each resident’s past is revealed, their secrets exposed, I was ever more intrigued.

This book is full of very interesting characters. Young Cher fighting for survival day after day while trying to keep her secret hidden steals your heart with her cheeky mouth and caring nature. Collette’s need to be there for her mother forcing her to risk her safety and then putting the other residents before herself, make you respect this messed up woman. But my favourite of all is Vesta – this feisty seventy-year-old lady was the star from start to end. I adored this character. The author managed to bring this woman leaping off the page in every scene. She was a realistic, strong woman you end up admiring.

No doubt, I loved this book. This is one of my five-star reads for the year. I cannot wait to get my hand on more of Alex Marwood’s books. I should be packing and preparing for my move which is happening in forty-two days – however, this book proved a powerful distraction.

If you enjoy a dark crime thriller full of gory details that will keep you reading late into the night, that I highly recommend that you get your hands on a copy of The Killer Next Door. This bone-chilling tale is guaranteed to keep you entertained from start to finish.
