Book six in the series, I have almost caught up with all of them. Steve Cavanagh never fails to deliver high-stakes courtroom drama with the kind of tension that keeps you glued to the pages — and The Devil’s Advocate might just be his most chilling Eddie Flynn novel yet.

This time, Eddie finds himself far from his New York comfort zone, deep in the heart of Alabama, where justice feels more like vengeance and the truth is buried under layers of corruption. The case is grim: a young woman, Skylar Edwards, has been brutally murdered, and a local man, Andy Dubois, is quickly arrested. The evidence is flimsy, but the town’s bloodlust is strong — and Randal Korn, the infamous district attorney known as the “King of Death Row,” is determined to see Andy executed, whether he’s guilty or not.

From the moment Eddie steps into Buckstown, the atmosphere is electric with menace. The town feels like a powder keg ready to explode — racism, fear, and blind faith in authority all simmer beneath the surface. Cavanagh paints it vividly, and I could almost feel the oppressive Southern heat pressing down as Eddie fights an entire system designed to crush anyone who dares to challenge it.

Eddie Flynn remains one of my favourite legal thriller protagonists. A former con artist turned defence lawyer, he brings sharp wit, clever strategy, and an unshakeable moral compass to every case. In The Devil’s Advocate, he’s not just battling legal opponents — he’s taking on an entire town, and the odds couldn’t be higher.

What I really admire about Cavanagh’s writing is how he balances a fast-paced, twist-filled plot with genuine heart. Beneath the legal manoeuvring and tension, there’s a powerful exploration of justice, prejudice, and the value of human life. And, true to form, just when you think you know where it’s going, Cavanagh hits you with another surprise that changes everything.

Gripping, intelligent, and unflinchingly dark, The Devil’s Advocate is a courtroom thriller at its best — and a reminder of why Steve Cavanagh remains at the top of the genre.
