Thank you, NetGalley and Harper Collins/Mira Books for this review copy – another step closer to my 100 review Badge! Rick Mofina delivers a heart-pounding and emotionally charged thriller in Someone Saw Something, a novel that grabs your attention from the first page and doesn’t let go.

The story centres around Corina Corado, a high-profile journalist whose life is turned upside down when her six-year-old son, Gabriel, vanishes from Central Park. As a parent, the premise is chilling enough, but Mofina’s writing elevates it into a visceral and utterly consuming experience. Corina’s fear and desperation leap off the page, making it impossible not to root for her as she races against time to find her child.

Mofina weaves together a complex web of suspects and motives, keeping the reader guessing at every turn. Is Gabriel’s disappearance linked to the horrible hate mail Corina has received, or is there something darker lurking beneath the surface of her seemingly perfect family? The gradual unravelling of secrets within Corina’s household adds a layer of tension and emotional depth that makes the stakes feel all the more personal.

One of the book’s strengths is its well-drawn characters. Corina is a compelling protagonist—fierce, flawed, and determined—and her emotional journey is both heart-wrenching and inspiring. Supporting characters like her husband, Robert, and stepdaughter, Charlotte, are equally well-developed, with their secrets and struggles that contribute to the story’s intricate dynamics.

The alternating perspectives, from Corina’s frantic search to the detectives piecing together clues, keep the story moving at a relentless pace while maintaining a sense of realism. The Central Park setting is vividly depicted, adding an atmospheric backdrop to the story’s intense drama. The twists and turns are plentiful, and while some revelations are truly shocking, others are subtly predicted, rewarding attentive readers. The climax is both satisfying and gut-wrenching, tying together the narrative threads in a way that feels earned and authentic.

If there’s a critique, it’s that some aspects of the investigation felt slightly rushed, leaving a few secondary threads less fully explored than they could have been. However, this doesn’t detract significantly from the overall impact of the story.

Someone Saw Something is an electrifying thriller that explores the dark undercurrents of family secrets and the lengths a mother will go to protect her child. Rick Mofina has crafted a tale that is as emotionally resonant as it is suspenseful. Highly recommended for anyone who loves a twisty page-turner with a strong emotional core.

THE DYING HOUR

The Dying Hour introduces Jason Wade, a rookie crime reporter with The Seattle Mirror, a loner who grew up in the shadow of a brewery in one of the city’s blue-collar neighborhoods. At The Seattle Mirror, he is competing for the single full-time job being offered through the paper’s intense intern program. But unlike the program’s other young reporters, who attended big name schools and worked at other big metro dailies, Wade put himself through community college, and lacked the same experience.
Wade struggles with his haunting past as he pursues the story of Karen Harding, a college student whose car was found abandoned on a lonely stretch of highway in the Pacific Northwest. How could this beloved young woman with the altruistic nature simply vanish?
Wade battles mounting odds and cut-throat competition to unearth the truth behind Karen Harding’s disturbing case. Her disappearance is a story he cannot give up, never realizing the toll it could exact from him. The Dying Hour is a bone-chilling, mesmerizing page-turner that introduces readers to an all-too-human young hero who journeys into the darkest regions of the human heart to confront a nightmare.
