This is my first A.A. Abbott book. She delivers a gripping thriller in Run for Your Lies, a story that intertwines guilt, regret, and the raw fear of survival. Very quickly, Juliet Price’s plight had me hooked, her shattered life pulling me into her world which is filled with tension and unease.

Juliet is a beautifully flawed protagonist whose struggles feel real. Abbott crafts her with layers of vulnerability and grit, making her a character you can’t help but root for. Her guilt over a long-ago mistake looms large, and the re-emergence of the child killer who upended her life is a stark reminder that some ghosts never stay buried.

The pacing of the novel is good, with every chapter adding suspense. Abbott builds tension nicely; you feel Juliet’s desperation as she scrambles for an escape, and the looming presence of the stalker adds a chilling undertone. The narrative’s twists and turns kept me guessing, and just when I thought I had figured it out, Abbott threw in another curveball.

What stands out most in Run for Your Lies is its exploration of guilt and redemption. Juliet’s journey isn’t just a physical escape but also a fight to reclaim her self-worth. This emotional depth elevates the story beyond a typical thriller and makes it resonate on a deeper level.

That said, the book does lean heavily on its suspenseful plot, which means some secondary characters feel less fleshed out. While this keeps the focus firmly on Juliet and her plight, I found myself wanting to understand more about those around her, especially the antagonist.

Run for Your Lies is a compelling read that grabs hold of you and doesn’t let go until the final page. A.A. Abbott balances action with a touching exploration of regret and resilience. If you love thrillers with emotional depth, this book is a must-read.

About The Author

Author bio from the author’s site

Who doesn’t love a page-turner packed with mystery, twists and suspense? Those are the books I yearn to read, and I enjoy writing them, too. I’m British thriller writer A.A. Abbott – known to friends as Helen – and I believe a good read is one of life’s greatest pleasures. As a city girl, I’ve lived and worked in London, Bristol and Birmingham, so it’s no surprise that my books are often set there.
Like 10% of us, many of my family are dyslexic. While I’m not, I want my books to be enjoyed by readers with dyslexia and visual impairment too. That’s why I publish my thrillers in a LARGE PRINT dyslexia-friendly edition as well as the standard paperback and ebook versions. Don’t forget, when you’re reading an ebook, you can adjust the font on your Kindle to suit your needs. Some titles are published in a conventional large print font too. Bright Lies is also available as an audiobook, recorded by amazing voice actor Eilidh Beaton.
I like speaking to book groups, business networks and social circles, and reading my thrillers and short stories at live fiction events and on Zoom. If you’re a book blogger, litfest organiser, reviewer or simply adore books, I’d love to hear from you.
I’m a member of the Alliance of Independent Authors, Bristol Fiction Writers’ Group, and Birmingham’s New Street Authors.
