NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED
Elliott has never thought of himself as a hero. Until one dark night, he meets Rebecca, a scared and vulnerable young woman who needs his help. There’s a man harassing her, following her; would he mind pretending to be her boyfriend, just while she walks home, to put him off?
And that is that – just a favour for a stranger – until there is a knock at Elliott’s door. It’s the man who was following Rebecca. He claims he’s her ex-boyfriend, but it’s clear that he’s been stalking her. He’s obsessed, dangerously so. He wants Rebecca, and he will do anything to have her.
When Elliott eventually tries to tell him the truth, the man doesn’t believe him. The only way to save himself is to get Rebecca to explain. There’s just one problem: Rebecca is nowhere to be found. And now it looks like one good deed will cost Elliott everything…

One Good Deed is one of those thrillers that grabs you with a deceptively simple premise and then steadily tightens the screw until you’re fully caught in its grip. David Jackson takes an everyday act of kindness and twists it into a nerve-wracking spiral of suspicion, fear and escalating danger.

Elliott is an instantly relatable protagonist. He’s not a hero, not particularly brave or reckless — just an ordinary man who makes what feels like a harmless decision in the moment. That sense of realism makes everything that follows far more unsettling. It’s easy to imagine yourself doing exactly the same thing, which makes the consequences hit harder.

The tension really kicks in once the stalker enters the picture. Jackson does a fantastic job of making this character deeply unsettling without resorting to over-the-top theatrics. His obsession feels disturbingly plausible, and the psychological pressure he exerts on Elliott creates a constant sense of unease. As Rebecca disappears, the story shifts into something darker and more desperate, and the stakes rise with every chapter.

The pacing is strong throughout, with short chapters and well-timed reveals keeping the momentum going. I especially enjoyed how the novel plays with perception — who is telling the truth, who is manipulating whom, and how easily reality can be twisted when fear takes over.

While the story occasionally leans on coincidence more than I would have liked, it never derails the overall tension. The emotional depth of the characters, particularly Elliott’s growing paranoia and guilt, keeps the novel grounded even when events escalate.

One Good Deed is a gripping, fast-paced psychological thriller that explores how quickly good intentions can turn into a nightmare. It’s not just about suspense, but about the cost of kindness in a world where not everyone is who they seem. A solid four-star read that kept me hooked right to the end.

About the Author

Author bio from the author’s site

I was a latecomer to fiction writing, having spent most of my adult life producing academic papers and reports. After some limited success entering short story competitions, I submitted the first few chapters of a novel to the Crime Writers Association Debut Dagger Awards. To my great surprise, the book was not only short-listed but given the Highly Commended accolade, which stimulated the interest of agents and publishers and eventually led to the publication of PARIAH. Since then, I have written several more crime thrillers, including two series set in New York and my birth city of Liverpool. I still have a day job in Liverpool as a university academic, but now live on the Wirral with my wife, two daughters and a British Shorthair cat called Mr Tumnus.

Regular visitors will know that I added David Jackson to my 2024 author backlist challenge, and this was the last book on my list. I have now read all of his books. I look forward to seeing what he releases next. Are you a fan? Which is your favourite book? I would love to hear from you, please leave a comment below. Until next time…. Happy Reading!
