There are so many ways to kill a friendship . . .

You’re lying, sprawled at the bottom of the stairs, legs bent, arms wide.
And while this could be a tragic accident, if anyone’s got a motive to hurt you, it’s me.

Bec and Izzy have been best friends their whole lives. They have been through a lot together – from the death of Bec’s mother to the birth of Izzy’s daughter. But there’s a darker side to their friendship, and once it has been exposed, there is no turning back.

So when Izzy’s body is found, Bec knows that if the police decide to look for a killer, she will be the prime suspect. Because those closest to you are the ones who can hurt you the most . . .

The Rumour meets The Holiday in this compulsive thriller with a toxic friendship at its heart that keeps you in the dark until the final breathless pages.

Official Summary

My Best Friend’s Murder will keep you flipping the pages as the author looks at an extremely toxic friendship between two women. After a lifelong friendship, these women are far from good for each other and the author exposes the toxins in this relationship piece by piece while the reader sits back waiting for the final bombshell, when it arrives you are left gobsmacked!

Polly Phillips brings us something new and exciting with her debut novel. Yes, toxic friends have been explored before, but she manages to bring the story to an earthshattering conclusion that will leave you completely stunned because it is not what you expected at all. I loved her grand reveal right at the end!

Bec and Izzy have been friends forever. Izzy supported Bec after she lost her mother and Bec has been a part of Tilly, Izzy’s daughter’s life since she was born.

When Bec gets engaged, Izzy starts behaving strangely which leaves Bec taking a deeper look at her relationship with Izzy, seeing that the friendship is not exactly what she thought it was. When Izzy’s body is discovered Bec knows she will be the prime suspect. Can she stay off the police radar? Is this her chance to have the life she has dreamed about for so long…. Or is there more to Izzy’s accidental death?

I just loved this book, starting the book I was convinced I knew exactly where it was going, so when I reached the ending only to have all my theories blow out of the water I was left amazed. The author had me rooting for one character only to discover that I was a little hasty in my decision. The book is creative, surprising, and wonderfully rounded off. I spent my last night reading late because there was no stopping after I reached the halfway mark.

These characters were amazing, I loved Jenny, Rich’s mom. She started out being the perfect mother and grandmother and when you feel like you know her, she changes, and her behaviour leaves you shocked.

The relationship between Rob and Sydney Scott reminded me of the 1999 romantic comedy Notting Hill, I loved it. (Julia Roberts played the part of Anna Scott – I think the author might have used the movie as her inspiration for this couple.)

Bec steals your heart when she appears weak and insecure, but as the story unfolds you find she is not nearly as meek and mild as she appears to be. She has her subtle little ways of getting back at Izzy. As for Izzy, I disliked her from the beginning. She was selfish, mean and her sharp tongue did not do her any favours.

When I put the book down I did not like the ending. But after sleeping on it and giving the final twist time to swirl around my head for a little bit I changed my mind. The book leads you in one direction only to bring the story around full circle. I think it is wonderfully creative.

This thriller can be added to mystery and general fiction fans’ TBRs as well. It is a compulsive, dark and breath-taking tale guaranteed to leave your head spinning. I loved it – feel free to add this to your wish list – it holds a surprise you will not see coming.
