Official Summary

As a mother, you are faced with moments where you doubt yourself. You want to be the best you can be for your child, and sometimes you cannot help but wonder if you are doing it right.

Little Disasters digs into a mother’s insecurities, support structures, family dynamics and friendships. This book looks at the extremes and how easily things can go wrong. I found myself examining my parenting skills and wondering what mistakes I have made along the way. This book is clever and compelling and once you pick it up you will battle to put it down.

Little Disasters was my first encounter with Sarah Vaughan and I have to say that I have already added Anatomy of a Scandal to my TBR. The author draws you into her fictional world and leaves you feeling as if you are reading about the lives of close friends. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more of this author’s work.

When Jess rushes into the A&E with her ten-month-old daughter she is hiding something. The attending Doctor, Liz happens to be a friend. Despite having drifted apart lately Liz finds herself facing a difficult decision.

Searching for the truth, both women’s lives are turned upside down as they are forced to face some dire consequences.

This book is expertly crafted, it is tense and absorbing and it kept me eagerly flipping the pages as I become submerged in the characters lives. It’s a book that speaks to motherhood and friendships. I battled to drag myself away from this one. Little Disasters left me looking back on my girls’early childhoods, understanding how easily things could have gone wrong. The book highlights the effects of Postnatal Depression and how easy it is to hide.

The women in this book were a pleasant mix that could represent any group of girlfriends. I loved their different backgrounds, their different lifestyles and how they managed to form lasting friendships based around their children being a similar age. In the world we live in it is so hard to form friendships with other mothers – I did not have any girlfriends with babies when I had my children. Reading this book, I look back and wish I did.

This is a tense read that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I would probably not have selected this title in a bookstore, but I appreciate that Penguin Random House South Africa sent me this review copy. I delayed reading this book, and when I finally got around to picking it up, I was hooked from the start. I love this book.

Little Disasters is a book that will appeal to women’s fiction fans, mother’s, in general, will find it hard to put this book down. It’s a brilliantly gripping read, sometimes even a little terrifying. If you are looking for a gripping, tense, thought-provoking book then Little Disasters is the book you should reach for.

Anatomy of a Scandal

Sophie’s husband James is a loving husband and a charismatic government minister. Yet he stands accused of a terrible crime. Sophie is convinced he is innocent and desperate to protect her precious family from the lies that threaten to engulf him. She’s kept his darkest secret ever since they were first lovers, at Oxford. And if she stood by him then, she can do it now.

Kate is the barrister prosecuting his case. She’s certain that James is guilty and determined he should pay. No stranger to suffering herself, she doesn’t flinch from posing the questions few want to hear. About what happens between a man and a woman when they’re alone: alone in bed, alone in an embrace, alone in a lift…

Is James the victim of an unfortunate misunderstanding or the perpetrator of something sinister? Who is right: Sophie or Kate? This scandal – which forces Sophie to appraise her marriage and Kate her demons – will have far-reaching consequences for them all.

Part courtroom thriller, part portrait of a marriage, part exploration of the extent to which our memories still haunt us, Anatomy of a Scandal is a disarming and provocative psychological drama.

About the Author

From the Author’s site

I’m a former Guardian journalist – news reporter and political correspondent – who always wanted to write fiction. My third novel, Anatomy of a Scandal, was an instant international bestseller, a top 5 Sunday Times bestseller, number 1 in the Kindle charts, long-listed for the Theakston Old Peculiar crime novel of the year 2018 and shortlisted for the Audible Sounds of Crime Awards, GoodReads Jury Out award and French Elle’s Prix des Lectrices. Translated into 22 languages, it will be a Netflix mini-series, scripted by David E Kelley and Melissa James Gibson, directed by SJ Clarkson, and produced by Liza Chasin and Bruna Papandrea. Filming is imminent. My fourth novel, Little Disasters, was published at the start of lockdown in the UK and on August 18th in the US, with later editions from France, Portugal, Sweden, and Spain. I live near Cambridge with my husband, two children, cat and dog.
