When the Lightning Girl’s spark is gone, who will light the way for the rebellion?
Mare Barrow is a prisoner, powerless without her lightning, tormented by her lethal mistakes. She lives at the mercy of a boy she once loved, a boy made of lies and betrayal. Now a king, Maven Calore continues weaving his dead mother’s web in an attempt to maintain control over his country—and his prisoner.

As Mare bears the weight of Silent Stone in the palace, her once-ragtag band of newbloods and Reds continue organizing, training and expanding. They prepare for war, no longer able to linger in the shadows. And Cal, the exiled prince with his own claim on Mare’s heart, will stop at nothing to bring her back.
When blood turns on blood, and ability on ability, there may be no one left to put out the fire—leaving Norta as Mare knows it to burn all the way down.

Official Summary

Mare has turned herself in to protect the people she cares about. Now Maven has full control over her. The story follows Mare and her trying to survive and escape from Maven’s grasp. The story also shows you the POV of Cameron which shows you what The Scarlet Guard is up to.

This is the third book in the Red Queen series (Excluding the novellas) and so far it is the best book in the series.

I think what truly made this book better than the second one, was the fact that Cal and Mare were kept apart for most of this book. I have to say, I preferred Mare’s character when she was away from Cal. I found her a lot more refreshing, than in the first and second book where she was constantly fawning over Cal. I actually liked Mare in this book., I think her character has had the most growth out of all the characters. Overall I thought she was a lot more relatable than before.

I have to say Cal’s character sort of reminds me of Adam from the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi. Although Adam had more character development. This is sad because I get the feeling that Mare and Cal are going to be the endgame, which is annoying. I am Team Maven all the way. It just sucks because Cal’s character had so much potential but honestly I have seen bricks with more personality than Cal. Although he is in this book less so that automatically makes it better.

My favourite character had to be Maven. Is he the villain? Yes. Should I like him as much as I do? Probably not. I honestly thought that this book would be where we would get our redemption arch for him. And sure we sort of did, we realised he wasn’t as evil as we thought. But still, I wanted Mare to stop hating him which never happened. Overall his character was the most interesting to read about. I found myself flying through the scenes in which he was.

I loved Evangeline, I thought she was such a fun character. I loved the banter between her and Mare. I also enjoyed Carmen’s character. I feel like she was what I wanted Farley to be. She is independent and strong and doesn’t take any “BS” from anyone.

Overall, I loved this book, it was a fast and interesting read. I would definitely recommend King’s Cage.
