When shy publisher Kate Kinley finds mysterious bruises on her mother’s arms, she assumes the worst. Suffering with early-onset dementia, her mother insists nothing is wrong; it was just a clumsy accident. But was it an accident?

In desperate need of someone she can trust, her isolation and paranoia grow as the closest people in her life become key suspects. But with each heart-stopping revelation, Kate begins to realise that the perpetrator is no longer interested in inflicting bruises; they want blood.

Official Summary

Oh my word, why do I do this to myself? Keep Me Close is one of the most heartbreaking stories I have read in a while. Yes, it’s a fictional thriller, but I have a mother-in-law who suffers from dementia, so this book was just a little close to home.

You can expect a gripping read that will keep you engrossed from start to finish. I loved the story, even if it was heart-breaking to read what was happening to Celest. This book will keep you guessing while delivering twists and turns all the way.

Jane Holland is a “new to me” author and she kept me intrigued with this book right to the final page. The story is deeply moving, I found myself second-guessing all the characters in this book. The author tells this story beautifully and I am eager to read more of her books. I enjoyed how you never knew who to trust as Kate’s anguish dripped off the page.

Kate Kinley bumps into her deceased ex-boyfriend’s best friend, a difficult meeting that leaves him inviting her to dinner. Eager to start living again, Kate accepts. Opening herself up to Logan is not easy. Especially since her life seems to be falling apart while she is trying to establish a new relationship. When bruises and other injuries start appearing all over her mother Celest, who suffers from dementia, Kate is not sure who to trust. Soon she is completely isolated and no longer trusts anyone. Who is hurting her mom and why? Kate does not want to involve the authorities, fearing that they will remove her mother from her care, but she needs help?

Keep Me Close was extremely moving. While my heart broke for Celest and what was happening to her, I found myself angry and eager to find out who was to blame. I judged all the characters very harshly and never saw the final twist coming. I raced through this book in two sittings, and not just to meet my tour deadline. I simply could not drag myself away.

The characters in this book all appeared a little untrustworthy and I found myself suspecting all of them. The author did a fabulous job keeping you guessing which left me unsure about everyone – even Celest herself. She did a fantastic job making you doubt everyone.

I confess, while I battle with dementia stories, I loved this one. I was kept on the edge of my seat, angry at some of the content and shedding a tear for Celest. This is a marvellously gripping story that will leave you in awe with the final twist. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Psychological thriller fans will find themselves holding their breath as they search for the guilty party, and just when you think it’s safe to breathe again, the author adds one last twist. This is a five-star read all the way, you will not be left disappointed.
