Sometimes it is the one who loves you who hurts you the most.

Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up
— she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life suddenly seems almost too good to be true.

Ryle is assertive, stubborn, maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily. And the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. Lily can’t get him out of her head. But Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his “no dating” rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place.

As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan — her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.

Official Summary

Okay, so I have been seeing people rave about Collen Hoover for years now. This is the first Collen Hoover book that I have ever read and I wish I had decided to read her sooner. Hoover is defiantly worth the hype. This book had me hooked, it was a whirlwind of emotions. This book somehow had me feeling happy, sad, angry and compassionate all at the same time.

Now don’t get me wrong this book is filled with clichés however for once that made the book almost better. The male leads who are ‘too damaged to love anyone’ trope is defiantly overused these days. However, I found that in this book it is used to shed light on some topics that are a bit uncomfortable to talk about.

Now my biggest and only complaint is how everyone’s trauma is used to excuse their actions and no one is ever truly held responsible for their actions. This is somewhat annoying as there are a lot of people who go through similar things and don’t turn into huge d-bags.

I liked how there wasn’t any romanticizing of an abusive relationship which sadly so many writers do. This book was raw and realistic and this made it about a hundred times more emotional.

My favourite characters had to be Atlas and Allysa. I loved Atlas from the moment I met him, and that love continued throughout the book. He was so sweet and his story honestly crushed me into a million pieces. He’s got a lot of great attributes. For example, I loved how he was so patient and just knew that Lilly wasn’t ready for a relationship and gave her space. I’m not sure if I’ve ever felt so conflicted over a character as I did him. Then Allysa, she was such a good friend and I truly did adore her. I think we could all use an Allysa in our lives.

Then my least favourite was of course Ryle, I really couldn’t stand him from the very beginning and he just got progressively worst throughout the whole book. All I’m saying is if a guy throws me down a flight of stairs it will be the last thing he ever does.

I also loved the relationship between Lilly and her mother, I liked how Hoover didn’t do the stereotypical ‘evil mother that never gets along with her daughter’. I also loved how there was no victim-blaming when it came to the mother and her abusive relationship.

This book may be my favourite of the year so far. It was a ten out of ten for me. I would defiantly recommend it. However, I could suggest keeping a box of tissues next to you when reading this.
