New Year’s Eve, when the clock strikes twelve. A lavish party in one of Edinburgh’s best postcodes is sent spiralling into chaos when two guests fall tragically from the roof, impaled on the cast iron railings below.
For Tess, it was about more than reuniting with long lost friends. Recently diagnosed with an illness that could be terminal, it was her last chance to make things right. Having grown apart from her husband Marcus, she knew this would be the perfect opportunity to renew their vows, surrounded by everyone they love.
Their time is running out. Tess’ closest companion Sylvie knows this better than anyone. She’s trying desperately to offer her friend some closure from the guilt that has plagued them both for decades.
But as midnight approaches and the countdown begins, it becomes clear that someone doesn’t want a resolution.
They want revenge.

Another big thank you to Jonathan Ball Publishers for this review copy. You guys have been sending some truly magnificent books my way recently. This book has a beautiful cover and is a stunning addition to my bookshelf.
When you reach for this book, you can expect the unexpected. This is a twisty read that delivers an ending you would not expect. I was hooked from the first page and could not read fast enough.
This was my first Harriett Tyce book and I loved it. She tells the story skipping between past and present, keeping you intrigued and curious to see where the story is going to end. I loved the characters and the twists. I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy of Blood Orange, which I have added to my birthday wish list.
Sylvie and Tess have been friends forever. When Tess is diagnosed with a potentially terminal illness both their lives start spiring out of control. Sylvie is fighting to save her career from disaster while Tess, haunted by their past wants to make peace and right previous wrongs. Tess dragging the past into the present can lead to devastating consequences for Sylvie. Yet Sylvie knows that Tess does not have much time, and she promised to help her.
This twisty tale had me hooked from the very first page. I could not drag myself away. The introduction to the book told through the thoughts of a fox was a little unusual, but this opening had me curious – so it worked.
I found myself rooting for Sylvie throughout the book. She appeared to be the weaker of the two characters, always depending on Tess. I was convinced that Tess was a bad influence on Sylvie, she was selfish and mean and some of her actions did not scream friendship at all. I did not like anything about Tess. The final twist however left me wondering about my judgement. These two women are not what they appear to be at all.
This book is a wonderfully gripping read and I found myself completely engrossed, I cannot wait to read more of this author’s work.
If you are looking for a twisty, intriguing thriller then this is the book for you. You will find yourself lost in the pages very quickly and when you reach the final page, you will be left questioning your judgements. I loved it.
