Mare Barrow’s blood is red—the colour of common folk—but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control.
The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Maven, the prince—the friend—who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: she is not the only one of her kind.
Pursued by Maven, now a vindictive king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors.
But Mare finds herself on a deadly path, at risk of becoming exactly the kind of monster she is trying to defeat.
Will she shatter under the weight of the lives that are the cost of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever?
The electrifying next instalment in the Red Queen series escalates the struggle between the growing rebel army and the blood-segregated world they’ve always known—and pits Mare against the darkness that has grown in her soul.

The scarlet guard and Cal are on the run from the newly appointed King Maven. They are trying to find all the Newbloods before Maven uses them or kills them. There are a lot of ups and downs as they try their best not to get caught by Maven.
This book was pretty much just build-up for the next one and that was disappointing. Most of this book was just filler and Mare’s inner monologue. This book was just leading up to this huge fight, which doesn’t even happen in this book!
My biggest complaint with this book had to be the influx of characters. I am good with names however there were so many in this book and all of them have powers that you have to keep up with as well. It got to a point where I was hoping some characters would be killed off so I didn’t have to keep track of them and their powers.
I loved Cameron Cole, even though she only showed up in the last hundred pages. I liked how she was asking Mare all the questions that I was and she was what I wanted Farley to be.
Farley, this girl makes the colour beige look interesting. Farley had ample potential. She could have been such a badass. She was leading a group of rebellions! I didn’t like how the second Mare showed up she handed over the reins like it was nothing. Not to mention we meet her father in this book and that wasn’t explored very much.
I liked Mare in this book more than the first. She is more in control and isn’t as insecure as she was in the first.
I hate to say it but I may be team, Maven. Yes, I know he is the bad guy in this book and we only saw him for like five pages. Yet in those five pages, he had more character and presence than Cal had and Cal was in almost four hundred pages. I was surprised that the dynamic between Mare, Maven and Cal wasn’t explored more. I hope that is something that will be explored in the next book.
It took me six days to read this book, which is three times longer than I read the first one. However, I will say if the third book is nearly as good as this book is building it up to be, then I will be super happy.
I know I pretty much only complained in this review but the book was overall well written and I will definitely be reading the third one. I would still give it a solid four out of five stars.
I would recommend this book series.
