Author and single mom Finlay Donovan has been in messes before―after all, she’s a pro at removing bloodstains for various unexpected reasons―but none quite like this. When Finlay and her nanny/partner-in-crime Vero accidentally destroyed a luxury car that they had “borrowed” in the process of saving the life of Finlay’s ex-husband, the Russian mob did her a favor and bought the car for her. And now Finlay owes them.
Mob boss Feliks is still running the show from behind bars, and he has a task for Finlay: find and identify a contract killer before the cops do. The problem is, the killer might be an officer themself.
Luckily, hot cop Nick has just been tasked with starting up a citizen’s police academy, and combined pressure from Finlay’s looming book deadline and Feliks is enough to convince Finlay and Vero to get involved. Through firearm training and forensic classes (and some hands-on research with a tempting detective), Finlay and Vero use their time in police academy to sleuth out the real contract killer to free themselves from the mob’s clutches―all the while dodging spies, confronting Vero’s past, and juggling the daily trials of parenthood.

Zelda’s Review

Elle Cosimano did it again – this is a brilliant read and my favourite in the series so far. This is one you want to read in order as the storyline follows from book to book. Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun is funny and full of mystery as you join Finlay and Vero in the hunt for the identity of “EasyClean” a killer for hire who was introduced in Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead.

I do not normally reach for books with humour – but this series has me hooked. I love how the author manages to add parenting humour into an otherwise intense mystery. These are easy-reading books with colourful characters and dangerous Russian Mobsters. Not the kind of things you would expect to find together. The author captivates you with a brilliant mystery while entertaining you with wonderful parenting humour. This is brilliantly creative and entertaining.

Mob boss, Felix, makes it clear that Finlay has to repay the debt she owes or have damning evidence handed over to the police if she doesn’t. At the same time, Vero’s past makes a comeback. To keep everyone safe Finlay and Vero join the citizen’s police academy. While this is the perfect place to hide and the ideal way to identify “EasyClean” it also means Finlay is very close to Nick – the hot cop who is pursuing a relationship with her. Can Finlay keep Vero safe, unveil “EasyClean” and keep Nick at arm’s length while enduring firearms training and forensics classes – all before Felix loses patience?

I fell in love with these characters in the first Finlay Donovan book and with each new book I am hooked a little more. Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun is without a doubt my favourite so far. The opening chapter had me in stitches. Little Zak is fantastic.

These characters are wonderfully colourful. While Finlay has remained fairly constant throughout the various books, Vero is developing. I enjoyed how more of her past was revealed in this book – showing that there is a lot more to this “nanny” than I originally thought. The author is full of surprises and I love how the story keeps developing. I cannot wait for the next book to be released – Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice is due to be released in March 2024 – it’s a long wait….

I love this series, each book has been a five-star read! I have to thank Alicia for suggesting this as a Buddy Read – we have read all three together and you can be sure to expect another Buddy Read review when we can get our hands on the next book.

If you are keen on a book that is part rom-com and part suspense then this is the book for you. The author brings it all together brilliantly, ensuring a gripping read you will not want to walk away from before you have reached the very last page.

If you have not yet met Finlay Donovan, you are missing out on a fabulous read. Add this series to your TBR – you won’t want to read just one.

Alicia’s Review

This book starts just where the last one left off. Finlay and Vero trying to cover their tracks and stay out of jail. However, they are also trying to figure out who Easy Clean is as Felix is threatening them. They are trying to come up with the money to pay off their loan sharks, from Vero’s borrowed money. And on top of all that Finlay is still trying to finish her novel.

So in true Finlay Donovan fashion, everything is very chaotic. They soon find themselves within a citizen’s police academy as this is the perfect cover for the girls to hide away and also solve the case, of who Easy Clean is, as they suspect a cop.

I don’t know how it is possible but this book is even funnier than the last two. This is impressive since the two previous books were easily one of the funniest books I have ever read. This is so far my favourite book of the series. And just might be my book of the month.

I think my favourite character is still, Vero. I just love her sarcastic and snarky personality. I loved how we got a lot more of her in this book than in the other two. I also liked the new storyline between her and Javi.

I also loved all the mystery behind so many characters in this book. It really had me second-guessing everything and everyone and I loved it.

Finlay was still her adorable lovable and funny self in this book. It truly drove me mad whenever Finlay would put off writing. Oh my gosh, I don’t know why but it just made me so mad that she couldn’t write an ending to her novel. I mean, we have been hearing about this book for three books now.

Overall this book’s mystery was truly amazing and was an easy five-star read. I recommend this to anyone looking for a quick, light-hearted read.

Finlay Donovan is Killing It

Finlay Donovan is killing it…except, she’s really not. A stressed-out single mom of two and struggling novelist, Finlay’s life is in chaos: The new book she promised her literary agent isn’t written; her ex-husband fired the nanny without telling her, and this morning she had to send her four-year-old to school with hair duct-taped to her head after an incident with scissors.
When Finlay is overheard discussing the plot of her new suspense novel with her agent over lunch, she’s mistaken for a contract killer and inadvertently accepts an offer to dispose of a problem husband in order to make ends meet. She soon discovers that crime in real life is a lot more difficult than its fictional counterpart, as she becomes tangled in a real-life murder investigation.

Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead

Finlay Donovan is―once again―struggling to finish her next novel and keep her head above water as a single mother of two. On the bright side, she has her live-in nanny and confidant Vero to rely on, and the only dead body she’s dealt with lately is that of her daughter’s pet goldfish.
On the not-so-bright side, someone out there wants her ex-husband, Steven, out of the picture. Permanently. Whatever else Steven may be, he’s a good father, but saving him will send her down a rabbit hole of hit-women disguised as soccer moms, and a little bit more involvement with the Russian mob than she’d like.
Meanwhile, Vero’s keeping secrets and Detective Nick Anthony seems determined to get back into her life. He may be a hot cop, but Finlay’s first priority is preventing her family from sleeping with the fishes… and if that means bending a few laws then so be it.
With her next book’s deadline looming and an ex-husband to keep alive, Finlay is quickly coming to the end of her rope. She can only hope there isn’t a noose at the end of it…
