It’s autumn in Abergarry.

The nights lengthen and the weather turns and the atmosphere darkens as the community is rocked by a brutal roadside murder: a loan shark’s ‘bag man’, Craig Lumsden, is found bludgeoned to death in his car in the early hours of the morning.

The season for murder.

The case seems simple enough, and the fingers quickly point to the most obvious suspect. But things are rarely as simple as they seem…

A murder that’s too close to home.

Too close for comfort, and definitely too close for complacency for private investigators Maddy Clifford and Paul Mackenzie. Delving into the case brings at least one of them face-to-face with danger… will life in Abergarry ever be the same again?

Official Summary

This is the second book in the series, and while I have not read the first book, I still enjoyed this gripping, unpredictable read. You can expect a read that will keep you focused as this story about family and secrets keeps you flipping the pages. There are a lot of characters and you are guaranteed to find someone in this book you will like. The basis for this story is how far will you go to protect your children, with murder and mystery added to the mix ensuring you never face a dull moment.

The author tells a complex tale that involves various characters and generations. One prank during the 80s leaves a lasting effect on the various families involved and now the two PI’s need to unravel a murder that is close to home and affecting the people closest to them. At the start of this book, I found myself battling to keep track of the characters but the more I read the easier it become to understand who was who and where everyone fitted it. This is a detailed, complex story that the author manages to pull together beautifully, leaving the reader in awe as events are revealed you would never have expected.

When Maddy’s fiancé is arrested for murder, she discovers there are a lot of things she did not know about the father of her child. While working with Mackenzie and her father to uncover the truth about the murder, they discover a link to a past crime and a past case that draws them both and their loved ones into a dangerous situation. Some truths are best left buried while it’s important to reveal others, but how much of this story should they reveal to the police?

This book had me engrossed as I flipped the pages eager to discover where this tale was headed. Filled with secrets, lies and a need for revenge no-one ever appeared to be safe.

Maddy and Mackenzie have a partnership that is based on friendship, honesty and trust. They seemed to be the only two people who were honest with each other. This book is filled with secrets and everyone appears to be hiding something from everyone else. I enjoyed the children in this book. The author did a great job showing Jamie’s emotion and confusion as he picked up bits and pieces of a bigger story and helped the adults understand this mystery.

Fair Game is a book that will keep you reading late into the night as you join Maddy and Mackenzie in their search for the truth. There are loads of pieces to this puzzle and when they all fall into place you are left in awe. This is a complicated read that requires you to stay focused to keep track of the various threads along the way.
