Elevation – Book Review

By Stephen King

In the small town of Castle Rock word get around quickly. That’s why Scott Carey only confides in his friend Doctor Bob Ellis about his strange condition. Every day he’s losing weight – but without looking any different.

Meanwhile, a new couple, Deirdre and Missy, owners of a “fine dining experience” in town, have moved in next door. Scott is not happy that their dogs keep fouling on his lawn.

But as the town prepares for its annual Thanksgiving 12K run, Scott starts to understand the prejudices his neighbours face. Soon, they forge a friendship which may just help him through his mysterious affliction….

Official Summary

An engrossing, eerie tale about a man with a strange affliction who brings a small town together – a story about finding common ground in the face of ingrained difference.

This book is gloriously joyful with a hint of deep sadness, told with a mastery unique to Stephen King.

If you enjoy a quick read, that won’t take to long to get through, a book that can bring a smile, but still manages to bring deeper meaning, then this is the one for you.

Scott Carey is steadily losing weight, even if he doesn’t look any different. Strangely though, he weighs the same with or without his clothes, no matter how heavy his clothes are. He has no interest in becoming a medical experiment and decides to only tell his good friend, retired Doctor Bob Ellis.

Scott finds himself in an escalating battle with his new neighbours, a lesbian couple, whose dogs favour his front lawn for doing their business. The two women, very different, are trying to launch a new restaurant in town, but the people of Castle Rock would rather stay far away from the gay married couple, leaving their restaurant in trouble. Scott soon comes to see the prejudices they face and try to help.

This book will put a smile on your face and a lump in your throat – I found it very entertaining and nothing like the other Stephen King books I have read. Something worth adding to your TBR (To be Read) list.
