Official Summary
Looking at past injustices and the cruelty man can inflict on each other this book explores how history can haunt the present day. Echoes of Home is an old-fashioned ghost story that will leave the hairs on the back of your neck standing on ends.
M.L. Rayner writes a truly old-fashioned ghost story. While reading this book you feel as if you are transported back in time. His beautiful description of the harsh weather conditions and the stunning scenery of Elphin leaves you wishing you can visit this isolated village.
After burring his mother, Leslie Wills is left all alone in the world. Returning to his childhood home is nothing more than a reminder of his loneliness. When he is given the opportunity to move to a cottage in Elphin he jumps at the opportunity to start a new life.
However, upon arrival, some strange things happen at the cottage that leaves him consumed with fear. Befriending an old local, Leslie slowly uncovers the history of the past and the reason behind the haunting of the cottage he calls home. Yet, is being armed with the truth of the sad past enough to escape the nightmare that is now his life?
Reading this book feels like you are reading something a lot older than it is. It has the feel of reading a sad piece of history despite being a work of fiction. The author draws you into his story and transports you into the past, feel pained at the injustice of the past. It is a moving story despite being a ghost story.
Leslie Wills is an old-school character, he is insecure and easily frightened and some of his actions left me smiling. Michael Coull is a wise old man who finds it difficult to share his knowledge, often speaking in riddles that leaves you wanting to ask him more questions as Leslie often did. He comes across as a slightly grumpy old man, making him all the more likable. Martha Ferrell steals your heart and her story leaves a lump in your throat. The author did a wonderful job with Martha and you find yourself filled with compassion for this woman.
Echoes of Home is something different, a ghost story filled with emotion that is well worth adding to your TBR. This book is a quick read that will keep you entertained as you uncover the mystery of the past that haunts Leslie Wills. Mystery and Ghost Story fanatics will love this book.
