Defy me – Book Review

By Tahereh Mafia

She was never meant for you. She was never meant for any of this. That girl was sentenced to death the moment I named her Juliette.

Juliette Ferrars isn’t who she thinks she is.

Nothing in her world is what it seemed. She thought she’d defeated The Reestablishment. She thought she’d finally taken control of her life, her power, and her pain. But a lifetime of lies unravelling before her has changed all that.

Stronger, braver, and more resilient than ever before, Juliette must fight for life and love. But first, she has to survive the war being waged against her mind.

She has to remember who she was.

Official Summary

Defy Me picks up right where Restore Me left off. Juliette and Warner disappear shortly after Juliette kills a whole room full of people after getting upset. You meet Max and Evie Sommers, who are holding Warner and Juliette captive and are torturing them.

We find the past through a whole bunch of flashbacks, memories from Juliette/Ella and Warner. They remember each other and what their parents did to them. I hated Juliette/Ella’s parents for everything they did to Ella, Emmaline and Warner. I truly think that Evie got what she deserved in the end.

I loved this new Juliette- or Ella – she was perfect. In Restore me I was afraid of the direction her character was going.  In this book, Ella amazed me. I think that is the thing that made me enjoy this book so much as opposed to Restore Me. We had our strong independent girl back! She was the girl we all fell in love with. Perhaps it was because she got her memories back and realised who she was.

Then there was Warner, I must say my heart just broken into a million pieces for him. We saw so many more sides to his character we not only saw the perfect façade he puts up but we saw how sassy, funny and strong he truly is. I also liked how different he is if you compare him to the first book. Character development! We love it.

I was really happy when Kenji and Nazeera kissed but afterwards when they said they couldn’t be together, it made me sad. I thought they would have made an awesome pairing, although we still have “Imagine Me”, so maybe there is still hope.

I liked Nouria, when I read Restore Me I thought that she was Castle’s wife, it was a bit strange finding out that she was his daughter. I was happy for her character, she was sweet.

I think this book is awesome and would definably recommend it.
