A Dead Wolf, A Drug Deal Gone Wrong, A Lethal Female Assassin.

Hannah Wester, a policewoman in the remote northern town of Haparanda, Sweden, finds herself on the precipice of chaos.

When human remains are found in the stomach of a dead wolf, Hannah knows that this summer won’t be like any other. The remains are linked to a bloody drug deal across the border in Finland. But how did the victim end up in the woods outside of Haparanda? And where have the drugs and money gone?

Hannah and her colleagues leave no stone unturned. But time is scarce and they aren’t the only ones looking. When the secretive and deadly Katja arrives, unexpected and brutal events start to pile up. In just a few days, life in Haparanda is turned upside down. Not least for Hannah, who is finally forced to confront her own past.

The author of The Bridge and Marcella brings us, Cry Wolf. This gripping, edge of your seat mystery is set in Sweden and will no doubt keep you intrigued from start to finish. I have recently enjoyed some translated fiction and this book is one I would highly recommend.

The author opens the book with the thoughts of a wolf, leaving the reader with an insight into what the wolf feels. Throughout the book, there are chapters about the city, what she sees, what has been and what will come. I loved this. These almost sneak peeks at what is coming leaves you curious as you flip from page to page. Sometimes translated fiction can leave the reader feeling a little lost, but the translator on this one did a wonderful job. Not once did I find myself confused or unsure of what was happening.

When human remains are found in the stomach of a poisoned wolf, policewoman, Hannah Wester, soon finds herself part of the hunt for the unknown. As the pieces of the puzzle begin to unravel, Hannah discovers that she is caught in an unusual case while trying to unravel the problems in her marriage. Only to discover that a lethal female assassin has been unleashed on her small town and that this deadly young woman appears to be more than Hannah bargained for.

While this book had a lot of characters, who sometimes felt a little irrelevant to the story, you are left feeling as if you are meeting a community. I loved the inclusion of little bits of history about the town and everything happening in the various characters lives. Cry Wolf is an entertaining read that will keep you glued to the pages.

Throughout the book, the author gives the town a voice of her own. Sharing bits of history as well as hopes for the future. The town also drops little hints about what is happening in the various characters’ lives.

Katja is introduced as a strong woman who only focuses on the job she must do. However, as the story unfolds, and the pieces of her past are revealed you are left feeling the sadness of this young woman’s life. While she is a deadly killer, you find yourself wanting more for this woman.

Hannah is a wonderful character. She is a policewoman, yet she is not a particularly strong woman. She is haunted by loss and dependent on a husband who is pushing her away and she has no idea why. She is not the typical fictional policewoman which makes her appealing. I loved how perfectly human she appeared to be.

If you are a fan of Marcella, (I have not watched The Bridge) then this book will appeal to you and I would highly recommend you add it to your TBR. It’s an intriguing mystery with awesome characters and a unique twist at the end.
