Cat Lady by Dawn O'Porter

CAT LADY [n.] Single, independent, crazy, aloof, on-the-shelf, lives alone…

It’s safer for Mia to play the part that people expect. She’s a good wife to her husband Tristan, a doting stepmother, she slips on her suit for work each morning like a new skin.
But beneath the surface, there’s another woman just clawing to get out…
When a shocking event shatters the conventional life, she’s been so careful to build, Mia is faced with a choice. Does she live for a society that’s all too quick to judge, or does she live for herself?
And if that’s as an independent woman with a cat, then the world better get ready…
Fresh, funny and for anyone who’s ever felt astray, Cat Lady will help you belong – because a woman always lands on her feet.

This book is a little out of my comfort zone. If you are a regular visitor to the blog, you will know that I do not often read contemporary fiction – I usually leave that to Alicia. I found myself roaming around the local Exclusive Books, looking for a book to join me on my trip to Zimbabwe and this book seems to be calling to me. This made a fantastic airport companion that kept a smile on my face.

When you reach for this book, you can expect a refreshing and honest exploration of societal expectations, independence and the resilience of the human spirit. The book introduces you to Mia, a seemingly conventional woman who plays the roles expected of her as a wife and stepmother. However, beneath the façade lies a more complex and authentic version of Mia, one that is eager to break free from societal constraints.

The story takes a turn when a shocking event disrupts Mia’s carefully crafted life, forcing her to confront the expectations placed on her. The author’s portrayal of Mia’s internal struggle is both touching and relatable, capturing the universal experience of feeling confined by social norms. The author did a marvellous job with Mia, navigating her journey of self-discovery and giving us a character who evolves and embraces her true self with authenticity and humour.

This book is a celebration of independence and tackles the stigma often associated with being labelled a ‘cat lady” head-on. Mia’s choice to live life on her own terms, even if it means being an independent woman with a cat, becomes a powerful symbol of liberation. I loved that this book challenges the notion that a woman’s worth is tied to societal expectations, encouraging you to embrace your individuality and live authentically. The author’s writing is fresh, funny and deeply engaging. The story is infused with wit and humour making it an enjoyable and uplifting read. The author navigates the complexities of Mia’s life with a keen understanding, creating a story that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.

“Cat Lady” will resonate with anyone who has ever felt the pressure to conform to societal norms. Mia’s journey serves as a reminder that true happiness comes from living authentically, regardless of societal judgment. The novel delivers a positive and empowering message, reminding you that, like a cat, a woman always lands on her feet.

What sets “Cat Lady” apart is the author’s love for pets and her deep understanding of the grief related to the loss of a pet. It was extremely refreshing to read a book that so beautifully explained how deep the scars left on your heart are when you have lost a pet. This grief is something most of us have experienced, yet very few people ever talk about it.

This is a delightful and honest exploration of self-discovery, independence and the courage to defy expectations. The story is both heartwarming and humorous, offering a relatable and empowering story for readers from all walks of life. “Cat Lady” is a testament to the strength found in embracing one’s true self, cat and all.
