Blue Moon – Book Review

By Lee Child

“This is a random universe,” Reacher says. “Once in a blue moon things turn out just right.”

This isn’t one of those times.

Reacher is on a Greyhound bus, minding his own business, with no particular place to go, and all the time in the world to get there. Then he steps off the bus to help an old man who is obviously just a victim waiting to happen. But you know what they say about good deeds. Now Reacher wants to make it right.

An elderly couple have made a few well-meaning mistakes, and now they owe big money to some very bad people. One brazen move leads to another, and suddenly Reacher finds himself a wanted man in the middle of a brutal turf war between rival Ukrainian and Albanian gangs.

Reacher has to stay one step ahead of the loan sharks, the thugs, and the assassins. He teams up with a fed-up waitress who knows a little more than she’s letting on, and sets out to take down the powerful and make the greedy pay. It’s a long shot. The odds are against him. But Reacher believes in a certain kind of justice . . . the kind that comes along once in a blue moon.

Official Summary

I cannot claim to have read all the Jack Reacher books, but I have now read ten of them. The Jack Reacher books are all pretty much along the same storyline. Jack arrives in a new, small town, carrying nothing more than his toothbrush and some cash, he gets caught up in someone else’s battle and fights to save the day while gaining a new love interest along the way. A true bad arsed good guy. That is what we have come to expect from these books.

Blue Moon sees Jack coming to the rescue of an elderly couple who got themselves caught up in two rival gangs loan sharking organisations. The Albanians and Ukrainians tolerate each other for the most part, until Jack Reacher waltz into town and turn things upside down.

While Jack has always been a strong, aggressive character you do not want to be on the wrong side of, he does seem to be leaving more dead bodies in his wake in this book. Maybe it is just me, but he is becoming a little more aggressive than usual.

His love interest in Blue Moon did not work for me. The previous Reacher books always had Jack involved with strong, dynamic women who could hold their own. I found Abby from Blue Moon did not gel with that. She lacked strength.

With all of that said, I still love Jack Reacher. The author tells his stories well and will keep me coming back for more. I have just received my copy of The Sentinel and I am looking forward to getting started on it.

My one problem with this series, I made the mistake of watching the movies. Sadly, that was a mistake. Now while reading the book I see Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. Do not get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with Tom Cruise, but isn’t he a little on the small side to be playing Jack Reacher?

Blue Moon is an enjoyable read with most of what you have come to expect from this series, so do not let my mention of the actor ruin it for you. Jack Reacher will always be that big, strong good guy who drifts into town and saves the day. I will keep reading this series Jack Reacher is worth it.

Keep an eye out for my review of The Sentinel, I look forward to seeing what Andrew Child brings to the story– I should have that up before the end of November.

The Next Jack Reacher Book:

Reacher #25: The Sentinel

Lee & Andrew Child

I am a sucker for Jack Reacher and this title holds the promise of everything we have come to expect from a Reacher novel. I will try to get a copy of this and add a full review as soon as possible.

Jack Reacher gets off the bus in a sleepy no-name town outside Nashville, Tennessee. He plans to grab a cup of coffee and move right along. Not going to happen.

The town has been shut down by a cyber attack. At the centre of it all, whether he likes it or not, is Rusty Rutherford. He’s an average IT guy, but he knows more than he thinks. As the bad guys move in on Rusty, Reacher moves in on them . . . And now Rusty knows he’s protected, he’s never going to leave the big man’s side.
