He doesn’t believe in happy endings.

She’s lost her faith that they exist.

But could they find one together?

January is a hopeless romantic who likes narrating her life as if she’s the heroine in a blockbuster movie.

Augustus is a serious literary type who thinks true love is a fairy-tale.

January and Augustus are not going to get on.

But they actually have more in common than you’d think.

They’re both broke.

They’ve got crippling writer’s block.

They need to write bestsellers before the end of the summer.

The result? A bet to see who can get their book published first.

The catch? They have to swap genres.

The risk? In telling each other’s stories, their worlds might be changed entirely…

Official Summary

10 October 2023

So since we are headed into summer here with our scorching hot days, I figured I would finally pick up the most summery book on my TBR. And it did not disappoint.

This book is told from January’s point of view. (Yes, that is the main female character’s name. Do I like it? No. No, I do not) January has recently hit writer’s block and so has her neighbour. Who just so happens to be her college rival, Gus. They take on the challenge of swapping writing their respective genres, and, in the process, fall in love.

Emily Henry managed to strike a great balance between beachy, summertime fun and thoughtful conversations about grief and childhood trauma. Honestly, January’s character growth from the first page to the last was amazing to see. Gus was also an interesting character as it took me a while to like him but once I did, I loved him.

I honestly enjoyed this book a lot, there were a lot of other fun characters in this book. I am already looking forward to reading my last Emily Henry book, then I have officially read all her books that are currently published.

Solid four stars. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun and fast-paced summer read.

Nora Stephens’ life is books—she’s read them all—and she is not that type of heroine. Not the plucky one, not the laidback dream girl, and especially not the sweetheart. In fact, the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients, for whom she lands enormous deals as a cutthroat literary agent, and her beloved little sister Libby.

Which is why she agrees to go to Sunshine Falls, North Carolina for the month of August when Libby begs her for a sisters’ trip away—with visions of a small-town transformation for Nora, who she’s convinced needs to become the heroine in her own story. But instead of picnics in meadows, or run-ins with a handsome country doctor or bulging-forearmed bartender, Nora keeps bumping into Charlie Lastra, a bookish brooding editor from back in the city. It would be a meet-cute if not for the fact that they’ve met many times and it’s never been cute.

If Nora knows she’s not an ideal heroine, Charlie knows he’s nobody’s hero, but as they are thrown together again and again—in a series of coincidences no editor worth their salt would allow—what they discover might just unravel the carefully crafted stories they’ve written about themselves.
