A freak accident in rural Wyoming leads the Sheriff’s Department to arrest a man for a possible double homicide, but further investigations suggest a much more horrifying discovery – a serial killer who has been kidnapping, torturing and mutilating victims all over the United States for at least twenty-five years. The suspect claims he is a pawn in a huge labyrinth of lies and deception – can he be believed?
The case is immediately handed over to the FBI, but this time they’re forced to ask for outside help. Ex-criminal behaviour psychologist and lead Detective with the Ultra Violent Crime Unit of the LAPD, Robert Hunter, is asked to run a series of interviews with the apprehended man. These interviews begin to reveal terrifying secrets that no one could’ve foreseen, including the real identity of a killer so elusive that no one, not even the FBI, had any idea he existed … until now.

The Robert Hunter series has me hooked and I have tried to read at least one of the books every week to work through them. While all the books have been dark and rather disturbing, what takes this novel one step further is the opening note from the author.

“This novel differs immensely from my previous books, mainly because this is the first thriller I’ve written in which most of the plot and characters are based on real facts and the people I met during my criminal-behaviour-psychology days……”

It is one thing to read a crime thriller knowing it is mere fiction, created by an author with a bit of a warped imagination, but reading a book knowing ahead of time that it’s based on fact…. Well, I am left questioning why these books appeal to me.

An Evil Mind strikes a chilling chord with its disturbing realism. The fact that much of the plot and characters stem from real cases gives the story a dark edge. Chris Carter brings you face-to-face with evil through Robert Hunter’s encounters with a criminal who claims to be just a pawn, caught in a web of manipulation and hidden horrors. The interviews between Hunter and the suspect are gripping; they’re unsettling, filled with moments where the reader teeters on the edge, questioning every word.

Hunter’s character, as usual, brings the blend of empathy and professional detachment needed for such a disturbing case. But even he seems unnerved as the twisted layers begin to unravel, each revelation more shocking than the last. Unlike the usual crime thriller, which may conclude with a sense of justice or relief, An Evil Mind lingers with you, forcing a deeper reflection on human nature and the thin line between fiction and reality.

This book is a stark reminder of why I love this series – it’s not just about catching a killer; it’s about delving into the darkest aspects of the human mind. If you think you can handle it, An Evil Mind is an unforgettable, spine-chilling read.

ONE BY ONE

‘I need your help, Detective. Fire or water?’ Detective Robert Hunter of the LAPD’s Homicide Special Section receives an anonymous call asking him to go to a specific web address – a private broadcast. Hunter logs on and a show devised for his eyes only immediately begins. But the caller doesn’t want Detective Hunter to just watch, he wants him to participate, and refusal is simply not an option. Forced to make a sickening choice, Hunter must sit and watch as an unidentified victim is tortured and murdered live over the Internet. The LAPD, together with the FBI, use everything at their disposal to electronically trace the transmission down, but this killer is no amateur, and he has covered his tracks from start to finish. And before Hunter and his partner Garcia are even able to get their investigation going, Hunter receives a new phone call. A new website address. A new victim. But this time the killer has upgraded his game into a live murder reality show, where anyone can cast the deciding vote.

About the Author

Author bio from the author’s site

I was born in Brasilia, Brazil where I spent my childhood and teenage years. After graduating from high school, I moved to the USA where I studied psychology with specialization in criminal behaviour. During my University years, I held a variety of odd jobs, ranging from flipping burgers to being part of an all male exotic dancing group.
I worked as a criminal psychologist for several years before moving to Los Angeles, where I swapped the suits and briefcases for ripped jeans, bandanas and an electric guitar. After a spell playing for several well-known glam rock bands, I decided to try my luck in London, where I was fortunate enough to have played for a number of famous artists. I toured the world several times as a professional musician.
A few years ago I gave it all up to become a full time writer.

Thank you for visiting the blog and reading my review. I did not think anything could be as dark and disturbing as Cody McFadyen’s books, but Chris Carter is proving me wrong. These books may not be for everyone, they are graphic and may be too harsh for sensitive readers. I am left shocked after each one I read, yet I keep racing back for more. I am already reaching for the next book in the series. (As soon as I have read something a little lighter that is.) Which is your favourite Robert Hunter book? I would love to hear your thoughts, please leave a comment below. Until next time…. Happy reading!
