What if they could have both?
A gripping and propulsive exploration of love, marriage, parenthood, and the road not taken, After the End brings one unforgettable family from unimaginable loss to a surprising, satisfying, and redemptive ending and the life they are fated to find. Clare Mackintosh has published nine books and this is the sixth one I have read. I am yet to be disappointed. While her books are different, I always find myself captivated by her writing. I am determined to work my way through all of this author’s books so you can expect to see more reviews on her work during the coming months.

After The End is an emotional, sad story that will bring a tear to your eye and stay with you long after you have read the final page. The idea of being in a situation where you need to decide if your child will live or die is something I hope I never have to deal with. Knowing that the author found herself in exactly that situation, and then went on to write about it leaves me admiring her courage while my heart simply breaks for her.

When you reach for this book you can expect a heart-wrenching exploration of love, marriage, parenthood and the profound choices that can shape a family’s destiny.

Max and Pip, initially portrayed as an unbreakable couple, find themselves at a crossroads when their son falls seriously ill. The narrative navigates the complexities of their relationship, introducing a compelling moral dilemma that tests the very foundation of their bond.

The strength of Clare Mackintosh’s storytelling lies in her ability to delve into the intricacies of human emotion, making you deeply connected with her characters. As the couple faces the unimaginable – the life-threatening illness of their child – the author expertly portrays the agony, despair and conflicting desires that accompany such a dreadful experience. The central question of the story, what if they could have both futures for their son, introduces a gripping and thought-provoking element that keeps you engaged throughout the book.

This book reminded me of Jodi Picoult’s emotionally charged novel “My Sister’s Keeper” as it tackles ethical dilemmas and the toll they take on family relationships. Clare Mackintosh weaves a narrative that explores the profound impact of decision-making, highlighting the dynamics of love and sacrifice within a family unit. The journey from unimaginable loss to a surprising and redemptive ending is both heartbreaking and unpredictable. The author navigates the twists and turns of the plot, keeping you on the edge of your seat. The characters evolve realistically, each coping with grief and conflict in their unique ways, adding depth and authenticity to the story.

The exploration of the “road not taken” is a recurring theme, leaving you reflecting on your choices and the unpredictable nature of life. The author leaves you wondering if sometimes the end is not the conclusion but rather another beginning – a powerful and hopeful message that fills this novel.

I loved this book even if it left me with tears rolling down my cheeks. After The End is a compelling, emotionally charged book that captures the complexities of human relationships and the unforeseen challenges that life can through your way. This book takes you on an unforgettable journey, reminding you that even in the face of tragedy, there can be surprising new beginnings. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. If you haven’t yet, please add this one to your TBR.

I See You

Every morning and evening, Zoe Walker takes the same route to the train station, waits at a certain place on the platform, finds her favorite spot in the car, never suspecting that someone is watching her…
It all starts with a classified ad. During her commute home one night, while glancing through her local paper, Zoe sees her own face staring back at her; a grainy photo along with a phone number and a listing for a website called FindTheOne.com.
Other women begin appearing in the same ad, a different one every day, and Zoe realizes they’ve become the victims of increasingly violent crimes—including murder. With the help of a determined cop, she uncovers the ad’s twisted purpose…A discovery that turns her paranoia into full-blown panic. Zoe is sure that someone close to her has set her up as the next target.
And now that man on the train—the one smiling at Zoe from across the car—could be more than just a friendly stranger. He could be someone who has deliberately chosen her and is ready to make his next move…
