This was my fourth Jeneva Rose book, and once again, she managed to surprise me with a killer twist!
The story starts out feeling like it might be a romance, but there is something slightly off from the very beginning. We are introduced to Grace and Calvin, two people who appear to have met by chance. Yet, almost immediately, you get the feeling that something doesn’t quite add up. There are little things about their interactions that make you question whether this really was a chance meeting, even though there is no solid evidence to support your suspicions.
Grace seems to be a woman looking for a break from her life. She enjoys Calvin’s attention, but it is clear that she has no intention of staying at the ranch. From the start, there is a sense that she is playing a game, and she blows hot and cold while Calvin appears to be falling for her.
As Calvin’s lies and secrets begin to surface, you start to question exactly who he is and what his intentions are. Just when you think you have figured out what is going on, Rose pulls the rug out from under you.
One of the things I really enjoy about Jeneva Rose’s books is the way she creates characters who initially seem quite straightforward. She gives you just enough information to form an opinion about them, and then, once you think you know who you are dealing with, she reveals another side of their personalities. Suddenly, everything you thought you knew needs to be reconsidered.
I have come to expect twists from Rose, but that doesn’t make them any less enjoyable. She still manages to catch me off guard, and I love the feeling of realising that the characters are not necessarily who I thought they were.
The story did slow down a little in the middle for me, and I felt that the ending was slightly rushed. There were also a few questions left hanging, which I would have liked to see answered. Did Joe know what kind of man his brother really was? And did Charlotte finally give up on Calvin? These questions are never fully resolved, and I was left wanting a little more closure.
But ultimately, this was another wonderfully twisty read from Jeneva Rose. She has definitely become an author I enjoy picking up when I am in the mood for a story that keeps me guessing. Even when I think I have worked out what is happening, she manages to throw another surprise my way.
Four books in, and I am still not quite sure I can trust anything Jeneva Rose tells me – which is probably exactly how it should be!
