B.A. Paris delivers another twisty thriller that keeps you guessing for most of the story. This was my fifth book by Paris, and I am becoming familiar with her writing style. Once again, I went in expecting the unexpected. This time, though, I had a few suspicions of my own—and, much to my surprise, some of them proved to be correct. Even so, I found myself doubting my theories along the way, which made this an intriguing and enjoyable read.
Nell is certain she is being followed, and she is convinced that her past has finally caught up with her. When she eventually speaks to the police, they suggest that whoever is behind it must be someone close to her. Nell simply cannot believe that anyone within her small circle could want to harm her.
I have to admit, Nell’s constant doubts about Alex were incredibly frustrating. They barely knew each other, yet even when she had reasons to be suspicious, she welcomed him back into her life. For a woman who was genuinely afraid, she could be remarkably indecisive. At the same time, I think that conflict was brilliantly portrayed. Her fear, guilt and uncertainty felt very real and kept me questioning her decisions right along with her.
I particularly enjoyed the notebook extracts scattered throughout the story. They provided important clues and added another layer of intrigue, leaving me constantly wondering how they fitted into the bigger picture.
Nell has spent years trying to atone for the mistakes of her past, but she remains consumed by guilt and convinced that she doesn’t deserve to be happy. Her inability to be completely honest with those around her keeps everyone at arm’s length, including Alex, the man she loves.
Despite figuring out some of where the story was heading, I was completely engrossed and raced through this book. Paris has a way of making you second-guess your theories, even when you think you have everything figured out, and that is a big part of the enjoyment for me.
This was another awesome read from B.A. Paris, and I am definitely looking forward to reading more of her books. I’m giving this one four stars. The fact that I worked out some of the twists a little too early kept it from being a five-star read for me, but I was still thoroughly entertained and invested in Nell’s story right until the end.
