It starts with a shocking accusation…
Stephanie and Patrick are recently married, with new-born twins. While Stephanie struggles with the disorienting effects of sleep deprivation, there’s one thing she knows for certain – she has everything she ever wanted.
Then a woman from his past arrives and makes a shocking accusation about his first wife. He always claimed her death was an accident – but she says it was murder.
He insists he’s innocent, that this is nothing but a blackmail attempt. But is Patrick telling the truth? Or has Stephanie made a terrible mistake?
How will it end?

This one was another brilliant read. I keep reaching for Shari Lapena books, and they keep getting better. She is firmly in her element with The End of Her, a tense domestic thriller that thrives on suspicion, secrets, and the terrifying idea that you might not truly know the person you’ve built your life with.
Stephanie and Patrick appear to have the perfect new beginning: a recent marriage, newborn twins, and a future full of promise. Lapena cleverly uses Stephanie’s exhaustion and emotional vulnerability to blur the line between paranoia and instinct. The sleep deprivation is more than just a background detail — it becomes a key part of the suspense, making both Stephanie and the reader question what’s real and what isn’t.
The arrival of a woman from Patrick’s past acts as the novel’s catalyst, and from that moment, the tension steadily escalates. The accusation surrounding Patrick’s first wife is deeply unsettling, and Lapena excels at drip-feeding doubt. Just when you think you know who to believe, the narrative shifts, keeping you constantly off balance.
The pacing is sharp and addictive, with short chapters that make it dangerously easy to keep reading “just one more.” I particularly enjoyed how the story explores trust within marriage — how quickly certainty can fracture when a single seed of doubt is planted.
While some twists are more subtle than shocking, they suit the tone of the novel well. The focus remains firmly on psychological tension rather than explosive revelations, which may not work for everyone, but felt effective to me.
The End of Her is a compelling, unsettling thriller that plays on fears many readers can relate to. It’s not Lapena’s most jaw-dropping novel, but it’s a smart, tightly written story that keeps you guessing until the final pages. A strong four-star read for fans of domestic suspense.
