With all the hype on social media about this book I could not resist – I had to read it. Sadly, I struggled with this one.Gone Before Goodbye is an intriguing, high-concept thriller with a strong central character, but for me it didn’t fully live up to its potential.
Maggie McCabe is a compelling protagonist from the outset—a talented Army combat surgeon brought low by personal tragedy and professional ruin. Her fall from grace is engaging, and I appreciated that she’s written as tough, capable, and emotionally bruised rather than instantly likeable. The premise itself is gripping: secret surgeries, anonymous billionaires, and a patient who vanishes under her care. It promises danger, mystery, and moral grey areas.
The early part of the story moves at a good pace and builds intrigue, especially once Maggie is pulled into a world of extreme wealth and secrecy. However, as the plot unfolds, it starts to feel a bit overstuffed. Some twists are predictable, and others feel rushed, as though the story is trying to juggle too many ideas at once without fully exploring them.
While the tension is there, I struggled to fully connect emotionally, and the stakes didn’t always land as strongly as I’d hoped. The thriller elements are solid, but they lack the sharp edge and depth I usually expect, particularly given the powerhouse names involved.
Gone Before Goodbye is an entertaining and easy read with a strong setup and an interesting lead, but it doesn’t quite stick the landing. A decent thriller for fans of fast-moving plots and glamorous, high-risk settings—just not as memorable as it could have been.
