I’ve officially made my way through all of Catherine Cooper’s books, and I can safely say I’ve loved every twisty, atmospheric minute of the ride. Few authors know how to set a scene quite like Cooper — her thrillers are the perfect combination of glamorous locations, complicated characters, and dark secrets simmering beneath the surface.
What I love most about her writing is how the settings feel like characters themselves. Whether it’s the icy slopes of the French Alps or a sun-soaked Mediterranean island, Cooper has this incredible ability to whisk you away to beautiful, often remote places… and then completely unravel the picture-perfect surface to reveal the tension lurking underneath.
The Chalet and The Chateau are easily my favourites from her collection. The Chalet had that perfect mix of luxury, isolation, and buried secrets, all set against the snow-capped mountains — it was atmospheric, chilling, and utterly addictive. The Chateau took it up a notch with its gorgeous yet sinister French setting — the sprawling property, the hidden agendas… I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.
I also really enjoyed The Cruise and The Island, both packed with that signature Cooper tension and plenty of twists. There’s something about being trapped with strangers in an exotic location that just works so well — she nails that claustrophobic, who-can-you-trust feeling every time.
That said, The Penthouse was probably my least favourite — still a solid, entertaining read, but it didn’t grip me quite as much as the others. For me, her most compelling stories are the ones where the setting amplifies the suspense, and I found myself missing that slightly with The Penthouse.
But overall, Cooper remains an auto-buy author for me. Her stories are escapist, addictive, and laced with enough deceit and drama to keep me guessing right to the final reveal. I love how she takes seemingly perfect holiday destinations and turns them into a breeding ground for tension and betrayal.
If you’re after thrillers with breathtaking scenery, buried secrets, and plenty of “I did not see that coming” moments — Catherine Cooper delivers every time. I’ll be keeping an eye out for whatever destination she decides to twist into her next suspenseful escape!
