Gripping. Disturbing. Unforgettable.
Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter is one of those thrillers that grabs hold of you from the very first page and doesn’t let go until long after you’ve turned the final one. This isn’t just a story about a missing girl—it’s about the shattering impact of trauma, the dark corners of the human psyche, and the twisted secrets families keep buried.
Twenty years after her sister Julia’s disappearance, Claire Scott is living a carefully constructed life—until a new tragedy shakes her world and forces her to confront the possibility that Julia’s case was far from an isolated event. What follows is a gut-wrenching unravelling of truth, betrayal, and horror. Slaughter builds a tense, emotional narrative that dives deep into sisterhood, grief, and survival.
Claire is a fascinating protagonist. Her transformation from someone seemingly sheltered and unaware to a woman driven by fierce determination and a thirst for justice is both empowering and devastating. I found myself rooting for her at every turn, even as the truth grew darker and more uncomfortable.
This book does not shy away from graphic or difficult content, and at times it’s deeply disturbing—but that’s also what makes it so powerful. Slaughter’s writing is fearless, intuitive, and incredibly effective. The pacing is relentless, the twists are jaw-dropping, and the emotional weight behind the characters’ experiences gives the novel far more depth than a standard crime thriller.
Pretty Girls is not a light read, but it is a compelling and rewarding one. It stayed with me for days, and I couldn’t stop thinking about how well Slaughter wove such a horrifying plot into a story about family, strength, and confronting buried truths. If you can handle dark, intense thrillers with a sharp emotional core, this is an absolute must-read.

Every time I pick up a Karin Slaughter book I am reminded what a brilliant author she is. I must add more of her books to my TBR pile. I love her books, but I often shy away from them because the chapters are generally very long. I find longer chapters slows my reading, or it feels that way at least. It could just be my imagination. What are your thoughts on long chapters? I would love to hear from you, please leave a comment below. Until next time…. Happy Reading!
